摘要： Embodiments of a system that includes one or more integrated circuits are described. During operation of the system, an interface in the one or more integrated circuits receives video signals associated with a video image and a brightness setting of a light source which illuminates a display that displays the video image. Next, an extraction circuit, which is electrically coupled to the input interface, calculates a brightness metric associated with the video image based on the received video signals. Then, an analysis circuit, electrically coupled to the extraction circuit, analyzes the brightness metric to identify one or more subsets of the video image, and an intensity circuit, electrically coupled to the analysis circuit, determines an intensity setting of the light source based on the brightness setting and a first portion of the brightness metric associated with one of the subsets of the video image. Note that this subset of the video image includes spatially varying visual information in the video image. Moreover, an output interface, electrically coupled to the intensity circuit, outputs the intensity setting of the light source.

During operation, the system transforms the video image from an initial brightness domain to a linear brightness domain, which includes a range of brightness values corresponding to substantially equidistant adjacent radiant-power values in a displayed video image. In this linear brightness domain, the system may determine an intensity setting of the light source based on at least a portion of the transformed video image, such as the portion of the transformed video image that includes spatially varying visual information in the video image. Moreover, the system may modify the transformed video image so that a product of the intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the modified video image approximately equals a product of a previous intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the video image. For example, the modification may include changing brightness values in the transformed video image.

摘要： A magnetic data storage medium (16) includes a dedicated transducing head contact zone for engaging an air bearing slider (22), primarily when the disk is stationary. The contact zone is textured with at least one elongate ridge (68) extending in the circumferential direction. When a single ridge is formed, it runs in a spiral path in multiple turns with a predetermined radial pitch at least ten times the nominal ridge width. The ridge protrudes axially outward from a nominal surface plane of the contact zone, and is rounded and free of sharp edges. The ridge, or plurality of ridge sections, can be formed by a texturing process that includes directing a laser beam (54), focused, onto the contact zone surface. While the disk is rotated to maintain a constant circumferential speed relative to the laser, it also is translated radially to provide the desired radial pitch. The laser is operated in a CW (continuous wave) mode, to create a more uniform ridge.

摘要： Embodiments of a system that includes one or more integrated circuits are described. During operation, the system may determine an intensity setting of the light source based on at least a portion of a video image, such as the portion of the transformed video image that includes spatially varying visual information in the video image. Moreover, the system may modify the video image so that a product of the intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the modified video image approximately equals a product of a previous intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the video image. For example, the modification may include scaling brightness values in the transformed video image. Next, the system may identify a region in the video image in which the scaling of the brightness values results in a visual artifact associated with reduced contrast. For example, the region may include a bright region surrounded by a darker region. Then, the system may reduce the scaling of the brightness values in the region to, at least partially, restore the contrast, thereby reducing the visual artifact. Additionally, the system may spatially filter the brightness values in the video image to reduce a spatial discontinuity between the brightness values of pixels within the region and the brightness values in a remainder of the video image.

In another alternative, all touch sensing elements can be between the color filter and array plates. The latter alternative can include both conventional and in-plane- switching (IPS) LCDs. In some forms, one or more display structures can also have a touch sensing function. Techniques for manufacturing and operating such displays, as well as various devices embodying such displays are also disclosed.
