    • The invention relates to a vehicle heater which is independent of the engine, has a burner head (9) and a flame tube (8) and is surrounded by a heat exchanger casing (10) through which a heat transfer medium can flow. The heat exchanger casing has connections (A; B) for inflow and outflow of the heat exchanger medium, and regulating sensors (20; 20'; 22) arranged in the region of the connections are connected to a control device which regulates the operation of the vehicle heater in relation to the heat transfer medium temperature measured. The aim of the invention is also to have the alternative of the heat transfer medium being able to flow through the heat exchanger casing (10) in the opposite direction, the connections (A; B) for the inflow and the outflow of the heat transfer medium subsequently being interchanged, and the regulating values of the existing regulating sensors being adapted.

    • The vehicle heater proposed has a combustion chamber (9) round the outside of which a heat-transfer fluid passes, and heat exchange takes place between the heat-transfer fluid and the gases heated by the flame (F) in the combustion chamber (9). The flame (F) is produced by a burner. The burner includes a nozzle (18), designed to produce a spray of fuel, and a combustion-air fan. In order to avoid dangerous concentrations of fuel building up in the combustion chamber after the heater is turned on, the heater turns itself off automatically if no flame (F) is detected in the combusiton chamber (9) after a defined length of time after switching on. To this end, a flame monitor designed as a flicker sensor is fitted on the rear side of the burner (12), i.e. on the side facing away from the combustion chamber (9). The flicker sensor is mounted in a housing (24), and light from the combustion chamber (9) reaches it through a window (22) in the floor (14) of the combustion chamber. A processing circuit eliminates the constant component of the flicker-sensor output signal. The alternating signal thus obtained can be reliably processed.

    • A vehicle heater with a burner, a blower, a heat exchanger and a control device is to be of compact construction and form an auxiliary heater which can be mounted on a complete main heater independent of the engine. To this end, the vehicle heater in its embodiment as an auxiliary heater is fitted in a basic housing (1) of substantially cubic or semicylindrical shape with a substantially regular continuous upper housing surface. The basic housing (1) is axially divided into a first end section (2) containing the burner, a central housing section (3) containing the blower and a second end section (4) containing the control device. The inlet and outlet stubs (6) of the heat exchanger lie inside the upper surface of the basic housing (1). The vehicle heater in its auxiliary heater form can be converted into one which is independent of the engine by the fitting of an additional control device (8). A complete main heater can be made from the auxiliary heater simply by fitting a cover casing (14). The novel vehicle heater requires roughly the same installation space in both its forms, that of an auxiliary or main heater.
