    • An ion trap includes a containment region for containing ions, and a plurality of electrodes positioned on a regular polyhedral structure encompassing the containment region. An electrode is positioned on each vertex of the encompassing structure and at least one of the polygonal surfaces includes additional electrodes configured to form a plurality of quadrupoles on the surface. Alternating RF voltage is applied to the plurality of electrodes, so that directly neighboring electrodes are of equal amplitude and opposite polarity at any point in time. This configuration on the polyhedral structure forms a potential barrier for repelling the ions from each of the regular polygonal surfaces and containing them in the trap. Mass selective filters can be formed from the quadrupoles for parallel mass analysis in different m/z windows. Application of a small DC potential to a plate electrode outside the quadrupoles preferentially depletes single charged ions for enhanced signal-to-noise analysis.

    • The present invention relates to methods of detecting and regulating cellular DNA damage as well as methods of screening compounds suitable for modulating cellular DNA damage. The methods of the present invention utilize antibodies that selectively bind to a phosphorylated tyrosine residue in a SQEY tyrosine phosphorylation motif sequence or a phosphorylated serine residue in a KENSSQ phosphorylation motif sequence, where the phosphorylated serine residue is closest to the glutamine residue. Also encompassed by the present invention are methods of treating a subject having cancer. These methods involve the administration of an agent that modulates the phosphorylation of the tyrosine residue in a SQEY motif. Suitable agents for modulating the phosphorylation of the tyrosine residue of the SQEY motif are also disclosed.

    • The present invention provides for up- and down- regulation of cellular autophagy, e.g., for treating cancer or neurological disease. The invention results, in part, from discovery of two novel proteins, ATGl 4L (previously called "BISC") and Rubicon (previously called "BIRC"), which bind to a Class III phophatidylinositol 3'- kinase (PI3K)/Vps34-Beclin 1 autophagic complex. ATG 14L and Rubicon each regulate autophagic activity in an opposing manner. ATG 14L and Rubicon can be used, for example, to increase/decrease autophagic activity, to increase/decrease PI3K7Vps34 kinase activity, and in so doing, treat diseases and disorders, such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease, stroke, metabolic disease, and age-related disease. ATG14L can increase autophagic activity and PI3K/Vps34 kinase activity; and Rubicon can decrease autophagic activity and PI3K/Vps34 kinase activity.
