    • A damping bearing (20) including an inner ball portion (34) attached to an end of a support shaft (32), and an outer collar portion (30) attached to a housing (22) for rotation of the housing relative to the support shaft about a center point. A chamber (28) for a damping fluid such as grease is defined by clearance between the end of the shaft and the housing. The fluid chamber has opposed bounding surfaces (29, 37) that are non-spherical about the center of rotation so that the chamber changes shape upon rotation of the bearing, thus shifting damping fluid across the chamber. The chamber may be a flat cylindrical void normal to a centerline (33) of the shaft. It may provide only enough clearance for less than ± 10 of relative rotation between the housing and shaft. A set-screw (26) may pressurize the fluid in the chamber.

    • An air core power reactor (10) having a noise mitigating sound shield (40). In one embodiment the sound shield includes a plurality of sound absorbing panels (42p) configured for positioning about an outermost reactor layer (12') so that the panels reduce radiation of acoustic energy when the reactor coil layers carry current. One or more flexible members (48) are attached along the first side of each sound absorbing panel for contact with the outermost reactor layer. Sound barrier material (44) is positioned along the second side of each panel. When the flexible members are attached to a panel and the panel is installed about the outermost first layer of the reactor, the flexible members are positioned against the outermost first layer and the flexible members provide a gap between the first side of the panel and the outermost first layer of the reactor.

    • A damping bearing (34, 36) provides relative rotations between first and second subassemblies about a point (40). The first subassembly includes a fluid containment vessel (26, 26C, 26D) containing a fluid (32). The second subassembly includes a plunger (42) with a fluid deformation element (46, 46B) immersed in the fluid. The relative rotations are damped by viscosity of the fluid resisting motions of the fluid deformation element. Damping is especially effective in multiple planes containing a given line (23 or 43) through the point (40). The plunger may have rotational symmetry, and may be cylindrical about the given line. Lateral fluid bounding surfaces (50, 52, 2D) of the containment vessel may be spherical about the point, or may be shaped to provide clearance to the deformation element that varies with angular displacement between the first and second subassemblies to provide a predetermined damping profile.
