    • A fire exit alert system, preferably integrated into an exit device or automatic fire exit door closer, uses sound and light to signal the location of a fire exit in darkness and smoke-obscured rooms. The alert system includes a voice signal, such as "EXIT LOCATED HERE," to signal that the location of the voice is also the location of the exit. A white noise signal generator is used to supplement the voice signal and produces a sound that is particularly localizable by the human ear. A strobe light and a laser are used to produce a visual guide to the location of the exit. The strobe light is flashed when the word "HERE" is used in the voice signal. The laser is used to produce a cone of light that points towards the fire exit alert system.

    • A motorized locking mechanism for locking and unlocking a device having a hub rotatable by a handle about a hub axis. A reversible motor turns a threaded spring screw to move a locking spring and vertically drive a connecting arm between locked and unlocked positions. A locking slide is mounted on an end of the connecting arm so that it can pivot parallel to the hub axis. As the motor drives the connecting arm to the locked position, the locking slide moves into interfering engagement with the hub to lock the device. The pivoting motion of the locking slide protects the locking mechanism, and particularly the connecting arm, against damaging forces that can be applied by the rotating hub through the locking slide. If the locking slide is temporarily prevented from moving into or out of locking engagement with the hub, the motor may still turn and the locking spring subsequently moves the locking slide in the desired direction without the necessity of reactivating the motor. The locking spring characteristics and mounting, and the pitch of the spring screw threads, are selected so that the connecting arm and locking slide may be lifted and continuously supported vertically.

    • A lock mechanism for use with lever handles (36, 74) includes a lock core (10) and a latch mechanism (18) that is rigidly connected to the lock core (10). Stops and a spring return mechanism (130, 132) are entirely located within the lock core (10), allowing the rose (50) to be thin. The lock core (10) defines the rest position for the lever handles (36, 74) at an angle slightly above horizontal. The lock core (10) is made substantially symmetrical about a vertical plane, instead of a horizontal plane, and the inner and outer sides of the lock mechanism can be interchanged. A heavy-duty locking piece (86), including a pair of locking lugs (82, 84) that directly engage the lock core (10) near its inner perimeter, allow the lock to withstand abusive forces applied through the lever handle (36). Endplay is nearly completely eliminated through the use of collars (48, 70) that connect the interchangeable inner and outer sides of the lock to the lock core (10).

    • An exit device includes an electroluminescent exit sign assembly, preferably mounted on a push rail actuator of the exit device. An electroluminescent illuminator, an opaque material and a transparent protective cover form the electroluminescent sign assembly. The push rail actuator operates a latch mechanism and opens an associated exit door when pressure is applied. An inverter may be located within the exit device to power the electroluminescent illuminator with an AC or voltage. The electroluminescent sign assembly is preferably removable for repair or replacement without removing the exit device from the exit door and is located within a surface cavity in an electrically insulating touchpad on the exit device actuator. Additional transparent nonconductive material surrounds the electroluminescent material to provide further electrical insulation.
