摘要： A laser system includes an injection laser source having an output and operable to provide a laser output characterized by a first wavelength, a first linewidth, an output power. The laser system also includes a tunable pulsed source characterized by a gain bandwidth. The tunable pulsed source is operable to provide an output signal having an average power. The output signal includes a plurality of optical pulses. Each of the plurality of optical pulses is characterized by a second wavelength, a second linewidth, and a peak power. The laser system further includes an optical combiner having a first port coupled to the output of the injection laser source, a second port coupled to the tunable pulsed source, and a third port.

The method further includes amplifying the input signal to provide an output signal, detecting a feedback signal related to the gain value, and modifying the pump power based on the detected feedback signal.

摘要： A method of operating a fiber amplifier characterized by a spectral gain curve includes providing an input signal at a signal wavelength. The signal wavelength lies within an in-band portion of the spectral gain curve extending from a first in-band wavelength to a second in-band wavelength, the in-band portion being characterized by a first amplitude range. The method also includes providing pump radiation at a pump wavelength. The pump wavelength is less than the signal wavelength. The method further includes coupling the pump radiation to the fiber amplifier and amplifying the input signal to generate an output signal. All portions of the spectral gain curve at wavelengths less than the first in-band wavelength and greater than the pump wavelength are characterized by a second amplitude less than or equal to 10 dB greater than the first amplitude range.

摘要： The present invention provides a design and method of fabrication of a ridge waveguide structure with vertical gratings enabling weak guiding of light. In weakly guiding waveguide structures only a small portion of light from an optical mode is guided by the waveguide, with majority of the optical mode being present in a material outside of the waveguide structure. The present invention further provides an integrated optical device comprising a weakly guiding ridge waveguide formed on a substrate, said weakly guiding ridge waveguide including a ridge with a vertical grating structure, said weakly guiding ridge waveguide guiding an optical mode substantially beneath the ridge. The waveguide structure with vertical gratings according to the present invention uses materials of appropriate refractive index to provide weak guiding of light. The waveguide structure according to the present invention further enables lateral coupling of light from the waveguide structure to other optical structures that may be placed in a lateral plane that is parallel to the surface of the waveguide structure.

摘要： The invention relates to high power semiconductor diode lasers of the type commonly used in opto-electronics, mostly as so-called pump lasers for fiber amplifiers in the field of optical communication, e.g. for an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) or a Raman amplifier. Such a laser, having a single cavity and working in single transverse mode, is improved by placing a multilayer large optical superlattice structure (LOSL) into at least one of the provided cladding layers. This LOSL provides for a significantly improved shape of the exit beam allowing an efficient high power coupling into the fiber of an opto-electronic network.
