    • A piston and connecting rod assembly comprises an articulated piston (1, 2) within which the small end (6) of a connecting rod (7) is loosely retained by a gudgeon pin (4). During the compression and combustion/expansion stroke, a concave load bearing area (8) on the undersurface of the piston engages a convex load bearing area (9) on the small end and there is a clearance between the small end and the gudgeon pin. Thus the piston loads are directly transmitted to the connecting rod. During the late exhaust stroke and the early induction stroke of a 4-stroke engine, the gudgeon pin contacts the small end and the load bearing areas move out of contact. Thus the somewhat smaller loads are transmitted via the gudgeon pin. Oil from the connecting rod is directed to an oil receiving cavity (14) via radial passages (13) and drains through a gap 16a around a closure plate (16) forming part of the skirt (2). The relative clearance between the gudgeon pin and small end, is designed to be larger than the clearance between the load bearing areas of the piston and small-end.

    • A gearless transmission which uses one or more rectilinear drive mechanisms in series. The rectilinear drive mechanism comprises paired eccentric discs (31, 32), mounted on a crankpin (22) and guided by two pairs of rails (26, 27, 36, 37) orthogonal to each other, such that the discs rotate in the opposite direction to the crank. The two pairs of rails are mounted on fixing plate (38). In the transmission, the fixing plate is allowed to rotate, in some modes of operation, which provides a 2:1 speed ratio. The reverse rotating orbital motion of the paired discs is converted to reverse rotation, concentric with the input shaft, by means of a multicrank coupling (45, 46). Clutches (not shown) are used to select reverse rotation, direct drive or variable ratio outputs. Embodiments of the same mechanism provide reciprocating motion along at least one axis and also along two orthogonal axes so that the invention can be used as a piston machine with built-in reverse motion shafts which may be selectable.

    • This invention proposes a poppet valve actuation system in which the poppet valve is operated, via a cam follower, by a cam, which has a shaft passing through it, concentric with the bearings that support the aforementioned cam, and the said cam being joined by (2) pivoted links to a connecting rod, driven by a crankshaft, the first link, referred to as the "cam link", being rotatably connected at one end of the link to the cam, whilst the other end of the first link connects rotatably to one end of the second link, this second link, referred to as "control link" being rotatably connected, along its length, to the small end of the said connecting rod, the other end of this second link, termed the "free" end, being connected, via an appropriate mechanical joint, to an actuator that may apply a displacement to this free end of the control link, such that the control link's angularity relative to the first link and therefore the angular displacement of the cam can be adjustably controlled by the said displacement of the free end of the control link causing rotation about the connection of the control link with the small-end of the said connecting rod, the big end of which being free to rotate on the said crankshaft, the said crankshaft being driven in appropriate phase with the main engine crankshaft, and said crankshaft being on a parallel and different axis to that of the aforementioned bearing support shaft that passes through the cam. The actuator may be electrically driven and controlled, in response to signals from a sensor on the poppet valve or actuator shaft, in feedback or feedforward mode.
