    • A method of making a screen for downhole use uses mesh screen layers that are diffusion bonded to each other. The ends that will overlap to make a seam when the sheets that are attached together are rolled into a tube are compressed before the tube shape is created or thereafter when the tube shape and an inner base pipe are drawn through a die to join the seam made by the overlapping edges. Because of the compression of the edges, when they overlap to form a tube the wall thickness at the overlap is about the same as the remaining thickness of the screen portion. Optionally, a resilient material can be compressed into the open areas of the screen portions that will be overlapped to make the generally longitudinally oriented seam. The seam can be parallel to the screen axis or spiral around it. The outer perforated shroud provides a compressive force that maintains a barrier resistant to flow of sand particles between the seam overlapping surfaces as the outer perforated shroud, filtration tube and inner base pipe assembly is drawn through a die.

    • A device or system for controlling fluid flow in a well includes a flow control element and a water detector. The water detector may actuate the flow control element in response to a measurement of a property of the flowing fluid. The water detector may be a capacitive proximity sensor. The measured property may be a dielectric constant. The flow control element may permit a predetermined amount of fluid flow after being actuated to a closed position. Also, the water detector may measure a property of the fluid flowing after the flow control element is in the closed position. A method for controlling a flow of fluid into a wellbore tubular may include positioning a flow control element along the wellbore tubular; measuring a property of a flowing fluid using a water detector; and actuating the flow control element in response to the measurement.

    • A material (48) that reacts to produced hydrocarbons for example a swellable oleophillic elastomer acts as a latch to retain a stored potential energy force. In a specific application, a sliding sleeve (28) valve is held away from a circulating port (12) to allow drilling mud to be circulated out. Later, when the well is put on production, the lock that holds collets (34) in a groove (38) releases as exposure to produced hydrocarbons at a retaining sleeve makes it get soft. This, in turn, allows a spring (44) force to run the collets out of their groove and straddle the circulation port between two o-rings on the shifting sleeve to close the port. The closure of the port directs produced hydrocarbons to screens that had been bypassed when mud was circulated out due to ports being the path of least resistance.
