    • The usage of the transmission resources allocated to applications executing on a device in a packet data communications network are monitored and controlled. An application utilises multiple packet data streams on different physical bearers simultaneously. The amount of data transmitted per unit time by said application on each packet data stream is controlled individually such that data is not transmitted at a rate in excess of the assigned bit rate for each packet data stream. Each packet data stream of said application is assigned an individual bit rate at which data packets can be transmitted, the actual bit rate at which the application offers data packets for transmission on each packet data stream is monitored, and data packets offered for transmission on each packet data stream that would cause the assigned bit rate for said packet data stream to be exceeded, are delayed or discarded.

    • A method for checking the authenticity of a security article (158) wherein the security article contains magnetic particles having a magnetic saturation field Hs being greater than 100 A/m. The method comprises the following steps: (a) generating an alternating field of one or more fundamental frequencies; (b) subjecting an article (158) to be detected to said field; (c) detecting a detection signal emanating from said article to be detected; (d) examining the detection signal for the presence of any particular higher harmonics of said fundamental frequencies or of any linear combination of said fundamental frequencies and of said harmonics, said particular harmonics or said linear combination being indicative of the presence of said magnetic particles. The method is applied at point of transaction locations, where the article to be detected is brought into close proximity with a sensor.

    • An apparatus for detecting the presence of magnetic elongated particles in a substrate the base material of which has magnetic properties substantially differing from the corresponding magnetic properties of the elongated particles. The elongated particles have such a long and thin form that their demagnetisation factor N is smaller than 1/250, they have a diameter smaller than 30 micrometer and a magnetic saturation field greater than 100 A/m. The apparatus comprising: (a) means for emitting an electromagnetic source signal of one or more particular base frequencies to said substrate so that any present magnetic elongated particles go into a non-linear part of their B-H curve for at least part of a cycle of the source signal; (b) means for detecting an electromagnetic detection signal emanating from said substrate; (c) means for testing the detection signal for the presence of particular higher harmonics of said base frequencies or of any linear combination of said base frequencies or of said harmonics, said particular highher harmonics being indicative of the presence of said magnetic elongated particles.
