    • An alphanumeric input terminal (10) is shown in the figure which allows a user to enter a sequence of characters (40) that is compared to a stored valid entry code to determine whether access should be granted. The terminal (10) displays a random number which the user adjusts by a rotatable knob (30) to obtain a desired character (40). The character (40) is entered by pushing the knob (10). The entered character (40) is no longer displayed and the terminal displays another random character which is similarly adjusted and entered. This prevents observation of the characters (40) being entered since only one character (40) is displayed at any one time. By initially displaying a random character for each entry position, the adjustment made by the user to reach the selected character (40) is different every time. This prevents one from determining the selected character (40) by observing the direction and extent that the user rotates the knob (30) before entering the character (40).

    • An electromechanical cylinder lock (Fig. 1) includes an outer lock shell (20) and a rotatable lock barrel (22) located therein which is controlled by dual locking features. A side bar or fence (60) selectively blocks and permits rotation of the barrel (22) with respect to the shell (20) in response to insertion of a key into a keyway (34) in the barrel (22). A slider bar (50) is movable between a blocking position in which the side bar (60) is prevented from permitting rotation of the barrel (22), and an unblocking position in which the side bar (60) permits rotation of the barrel (22). Alternately, a blocking mechanism (Fig. 19) is provided to block motion of tumbler pins in the cylinder lock (30). A shape memory alloy actuator (706), such as a wire made of nitinol, disposed in the barrel (22) is activated by an electric current in response to determination by an electronic control device whether an attempt to open the lock is authorized. Thermal interlock protection from external heating of the lock is also provided.

    • A key with a blade portion having an improved cross-sectional strength despite deep cut bittings (101) which extend well into the thickness of the blade. The bittings (101) are cut across at least one of the blade surfaces so as to extend arcuately through the thickness of the blade and one of the side edges (112), and provides the key blade with increased strength to prevent breakage. The bittings (101) are cut into the key blade by a rotary cutter wheel (120) which is dimensioned to form an arcuate bitting surface rather than a flat surface. A cylinder lock includes a rotatable plug (141) having a tenon (142) with a plurality of corner portions (144-147), and a keyway (143) passing through the plug and tenon is configured to permit all of the tenon corners to remain intact, thereby providing secure seating of a tailcam on the tenon.
