    • A rotation actuated core orientation system (10) for a ground drill comprises an orientator (14) and rotation sensitive actuator (16). The actuator (16) is a dispersed system comprising two major components or subsystems namely a centrifugal mechanism (16a) and a time delay mechanism 16b between which is located the bottom orientator (14). The orientator (14) has an active state where the orientator provides a substantially instantaneous indication of a position of a known bearing or reference location in or of the hole, and a locked state where the orientator maintains the indication. The rotation sensitive actuator (16) isoperatively associated with the orientator (14) to actuate the orientator (14) to enter the active state or the locked state dependant on rotational speed of the ground drill.

    • A retraction system is described for allowing disengagement of retrieval latch dogs (114) of a down hole running tool (14) from a bit locking sleeve (18). The locking sleeve (18) is slidably retained within a drive sub (12) and includes a pair of slots (66) which are engaged by the retrieval latch dogs (114) when the tool (14) is used to retrieve bit segments (16) from the drive sub (12). The retraction system includes a sleeve (76) which is slidably mounted on a main body (74) of the tool (14) and spring (174) which is biased to push the sleeve (76) over the retrieval latch dogs (114). The sleeve (76) has a pair of diametrically opposed slots (235) through which the retrieval latch dogs can extend for contacting the inner surface (28) of the drive sub (12). The retraction system also includes a length (44) of the inner surface of the drive sub (12) which is made of progressively reducing diameter in the direction of retraction of the tool (14) from the drive sub (12). The upper end of each slot (235) is provided with a bevel (236) for directing the retrieval latch dogs (114) in the inward direction. To withdraw the tool (14) from the drive sub (12), the retrieval latch dogs (114) are disengaged from the bit locking sleeve (18) by the combined action of the shape of surface portion (44) which acts to push the retrieval latch dogs (114) inwardly, together with the force of spring (174) and the bevelled surfaces (236) which act to push the sleeve (74) over the retrieval latch dogs (114) thereby disengaging it from the bit locking sleeve (18).

    • A retractable drill bit system (10) comprises a drive sub (18) which is adapted for connection to a lower end of a drill (12), a tool (20) for installing and retracting drill bit segments (22) from the drive sub (18); and an insert (24) for selectively locking the bit segments (22) to an end of the drive sub (18) and releasing the bit segments (22). A plurality of recesses (5B) are formed about an inner circumferential wall at one end of the drive sub (18) and a landing seat (32) formed about the inner wall upstream of the recesses (58). The area of the interior wall between the landing seat (32) and recesses (58) is profiled with a series of tapered and level surfaces. The tool (20) includes a slidable cradle (176) extending from one end about which the bit segments (22) are held during installation and retrieval. The bit segments (22) being held in place about the cradle by an elastic band (198). The insert (24) is provided at one end with a series of keyways (218) which locate over the bit segments (22) when the bit segments are locked to the drive sub (18). The insert (24) is always retained within the drive sub (18). Bit segments (22) are carried by the tool (20) to the drive sub (18) and locked in place by the insert (24). The tool (20) can then be withdrawn and the drill (12) operated in the normal manner. To retrieve the bit segments (22), the tool (20) is relowered into the drill and then withdrawn a short distance to retract the insert (24) so that the bit segments (22) collapse back onto the cradle (176) and can then be withdrawn from the drill (12).

The actuator (16) operates as a linear to rotary motion converter which converts linear motion of one part of the actuator to a rotary motion of another part of the actuator between a plurality of rotationally spaced positions. The rotational positions determine the state of the latching mechanism.
