    • In order to monitor the temperature of an electric generator (2), the temperatures (Ti) of a plurality of rods (Si) of a stator winding (10) of the generator (2) cooled by a coolant (KW), preferably a water-cooled stator winding (10), are detected. In order to detect a temperature deviation ( DELTA Ti) in each winding rod (Si), a measured real temperature value (TiM) of each winding rod (Si) is compared with a reference value (TiRS) for said winding rod (Si). According to the invention, the reference value is derived from parameters (kij) previously determined for said winding rod (Si) by reference measurement and from presently detected, operation-relevant parameters (Pj) of the generator (2). The parameters (kij) for each winding rod (Si) are derived from a temperature (TiR) of said winding rod (Si) detected during the reference measurement and from a number of functions (fj) that corresponds to the number of parameters (kij). The functions (Fj) are derived from operation-relevant parameters (P*j) detected during the reference measurement in different states of operation of the generator (2). The temperature may thus be monitored while operation-relevant influencing variables, such as the stator current (I) of the generator (2), are taken into account.
