    • A gas mixing device feeds from two gas sources (1, 4), placing each gas into half of a chamber (17, 16) which is divided by a flexible physical barrier (12), such that pressure is equalised across the chambers (16, 17). Upon the release of each gas from each chamber at the same time into a mixing barrel (7), exit pressures and thus mixing characteristics are suitably controlled for a desired mix of gasses, due to the pressure balancing effect of the flexible barrier (12). The device might be used in the mixing of low concentrations of carbon monoxide, such as 1 percent, in nitrogen with more nitrogen to dilute the concentration to 0.001 percent.

    • The preferred embodiments described herein make possible to use lower cost, fixed flow components, such as critical orifices, which are fast to stabilise to a steady flow. These cannot be adjusted to achieve equal flows but are selected to be sensibly close to their desired flow values. This embodiment determines the true ratios of the flows of all of the flow controlling components. Actual flows are not measured but near equal flows are each fed to a common flow meter and the ratio of the indicated flow meter readings is taken to be the same as the ratio of the flows. Two, near equal flows are then combined and compared to a single flow of approximately the same value, and so on. The flow meter is used only to compare near equal flows so does not need to be calibrated nor linear over a wide range.

    • In a fluid mixing device calibration and complementary gases are supplied to constant flow devices (10, 12). The flows through devices (10, 12) are adjusted to be equal. The two gas flows are connected to switching valves (14, 16), which allow the gas flows to be either vented or fed to the frequency multiplier (18). The two valves (14, 16) are coupled to switch simultaneously but in opposite positions. Thus, the flow rate into the frequency multiplier (18) is constant but may be switched to comprise either calibration or complementary gas. The frequency multiplier divides the input stream into a number of equal streams which, after different time delays have been introduced, are recombined to produce a single stream of reduced concentration ripple and periodicity. The output from the frequency multiplier (18) fed to a series of chambers (20-24) where each chamber produces an attenuation of the concentration ripple and a time response to a change in concentration. As the attenuations of the chambers (20-24) are multiplicative and the time responses are additive, multiple chambers give a higher ratio of ripple attenuation to time response than does a single chamber. Better and faster production of substantially homogenised fluid mixtures is possible.
