    • A spiral binding element (32) for binding a stack of perforated sheets wherein the wire (30) has a cross-sectional area that is other than round, preferably rectangular, and a spiral binding element (32) wherein the consecutive loops are substantially adjacently disposed such that they must be separated in order spiral the binding element into the stack of sheets. The binding elements (32) have increased strength Jim the unbound form and the binding element having other than a round cross section provides increased strength and durability over traditional round cross-section spiral binding elements. Further, the wire (30) may be formed of a polymer and/or metal. The invention further provides methods and apparatus for separating consecutive adjacent loops in a compressed binding element to obtain the desired pitch before or while the binding element (32) is spiraled into the stack of sheets.

    • The present invention provides an unitary spine binder which comprises an elongated dorsal hinge bearing pairs of opposing and complementary male and female ring elements having known male fastener and female fastener, respectively. Each pair of ring elements also comprise a concave distal end on one element, and a complementary convex distal end on the other element. When the distal ends of the ring elements are moved towards each other, the male and female fasteners reversibly engage with each other so that each pair of ring elements, in cooperation with the dorsal hinge, forms substantially a ring to secure sheet paper by occupying a pre-punched hole in the paper. At the same time, the concave and convex distal ends also engage, so that the sidewalls of the concave distal end engages the convex distal end to protect the fasteners against disengagement by torsional and lateral forces.

    • The invention is directed to a binding element for binding a stack of perforated sheets into a bound book and for suspending the bound book between a pair of rails. The binding element includes first and second elongated spine portions that have an elongated spine, and a plurality of fingers sized to be received in the perforations and secured to the elongated spines in said bound book, whether by being initially molded to one or both of the spines or later secured. Other than the connection via the plurality of fingers, the elongated spine portions are unconnected to one another in the final bound book. The binding element further includes first and second selectively extendible hangers extending at opposite ends of the book binding from one or both of the elongated spine portions whereby the bound book may be suspended between a pair of rails.

    • The invention provides a group of standardized plastic binding elements that include two, three, four, five, or seven fingers that are spaced along the spine at precise locations to accommodate the perforations spaced according to specific standardized loose-leaf hole patterns. The binding elements preferably have spines likewise corresponding to at least the length of specific standardized paper sizes, i.e., 8.27 inches (21 cm), 8.5 inches (21,5 cm) 11 inches (28 cm), 11.69 inches (30 cm), 14 inches (39,5), and 16 inches (40,5 cm). The fingers of the binding elements either secure together or to the spine when in the closed position, or the binding elements are held in the closed position by other structure such that the binding elements may be utilized to bind a stack of standard, loose-leaf sheets without the use of a binding machine. Further, the invention provides a relatively small size binding element that may be utilized to provide a relatively small bound book wherein the pages can be turned without binding.
