摘要： The invention concerns a process for determining a target ATM address as a response to an address-resolution enquiry emitted by a source LAN-emulation client of a first ELAN, when the target MAC address to be resolved is associated with at least one LAN-emulation client of a second ELAN. The process comprises the following steps: encapsulating the address-resolution enquiry present in the first ELAN as the ELAN frame in a frame format of a wide-area network preparing a connectionless service and transmitting it via the CLS wide-area network to the second ELAN; decapsulating the encapsulated address-resolution enquiry and transmitting it to a LAN emulation server LES of the second ELAN in the ELAN frame format; resolving the target MAC address into an associated ATM address by means of this LAN emulation server LES of the second ELAN and outputting an address-resolving response; encapsulating this address-resolving response in the frame format of the CLS wide-area network and transmitting it to the first ELAN; and decapsulating the encapsulated address-resolution response and transmitting it to the source LAN-emulation client.

摘要： In order to transfer data packets between a source LEC of a first ELAN and a target LEC of a second ELAN a distinction is made between unicast frames and multicast/broadcast frames. When a connection has been established using the target ATM address between the source LEC and the target LEC, unicast data packets are transferred via a wide-area ATM network. Multicast/broadcast data packets are transferred from the source LEC to the target LECs via a CLS wide-area network which prepares a connectionless service. According to one embodiment, in order to transfer multicast/broadcast data packets, in each ELAN a special LEC is coupled to the CLS network via a bridge or a router. In order to determine a target ATM address of a target LEC for unicast transmission, the CLS network is used in one embodiment.
