    • A conveyor and methods for turning cases. The conveyor includes a pair of side-by-side belts (18,19) running preferably at different speeds. The different belt speeds cause the leading edge of a package straddling both belts to move toward the slower belt. The two belts (18,19) include transverse rollers (24) that can be selectively actuated in a series of actuation zones along the conveyor to push packages conveyed atop them to the right or to the left. A controller controls the actuation of the belt rollers (24) in each zone (z) sequentially so that the belt rollers supporting the leading edge of the package push it towards the slower belt and the belt rollers (24) supporting the trailing edge of the package push it towards the faster belt to accelerate the turning of the package as the belts advance.

A clutch mechanism includes a spring (58) pushing a clutch wheel (32) against a pivot member. The clutch wheel is arranged to rotate as the conveyor belt advances. Prictional contact between the rotating wheel and the pivot member imparts a moment on the flight to raise it to an extended position. When the flight is encumbered even by a light load, the low-torque mechanism automatically slips to prevent the flight from rising to the extended position.

    • Apparatus and methods using conveyor belts with activated diverting rollers to maintain the leading edge of a conveyed article while changing the conveyance direction. A first conveyor belt advancing in a first direction abuts a second conveyor belt advancing in a second transverse direction. Both belts have diverting rollers that rotate on axes oblique to the conveyance direction. The diverting rollers are activated by rolling on underlying bearing surfaces in the vicinity of the junction of the two belts. The diverting rollers in the first belt direct the article toward the second belt. The rollers in the second belt direct the article toward a side of the second belt. An article lying on both belts simultaneously rotates by the action of the two sets of diverting rollers acting on opposite ends of the article. The orientation of the rollers and their rotation maintain the leading edge of the article.
