摘要： A defect detection system (10) for thermally imaging a structure (12) that has been energized by a sound energy. The system (10) includes a transducer (14) that couples a sound signal into the structure (12), where the sound signal causes defects in the structure (12) to heat up. In one embodiment, the sound signal has one or more frequencies that are at or near an eigen-mode of the structure (12). In another embodiment, a non-linear coupling material (16) is positioned between the transducer (14) and the structure (12) to couple the sound energy from the transducer (14) to the structure (12). A predetermined force (26) is applied to the transducer (14) and a pulse duration and a pulse frequency of the sound signal are selected so t hat the sound energy induces acoustic chaos in the structure (12), thus generating increased thermal energy. A thermal imaging camera (22) images the structure (12) when it is heated by the sound signal.

The system (10) includes a hand-held sound source gun (70), a thermal imaging camera (22) and a control unit (30). The sound source gun (70) emits pulses of sound energy into the structure (12), and the camera (22)generates images of defects in the structure (12) that are heated by the sound energy. The control unit (30) controls the operation of the sound source gun (70) and the camera (22) for timing purposes. The sound source gun (70)includes a transducer (74) that is positioned against the structure (12) at a desirable location. The gun (70) further includes a pair of legs (82, 84) that are also positioned against the structure (12) to define a plane in combination with the transducer (74). The length of each leg (82, 84) is adjustable relative to the length of the transducer (74) so that the gun (70) can be used against irregular surfaces. The legs (82, 84) include a rubber tip 886,88) to further prevent the transducer (74) from slipping on the structure (12). In an alternate embodiment, the gun (110) includes three transducers (114, 116, 118) that define a plane that act to stabilize the gun (110) against movement.

摘要： A thermal imaging system (80) for detecting cracks (100) and defects in a component (82). An electro-magnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) (84) is coupled to the component (82), and introduces pulsed sound signals therein. The sound signals cause the defects (100) to heat up, and IR radiation (98) from the component (82) is detected by a thermal camera. The amplitude of the pulsed signals are substantially constant, and the frequency of the pulsed signal can be changed within each pulse. A control unit is employed to provide timing and control for the operation of the EMAT (84) and the camera.

摘要： A thermal imaging system (10) for detecting cracks and defects in a component (12). An ultrasonic transducer (14) is coupled to the specimen (12) through a malleable coupler (16). Ultrasonic energy from the transducer (14) causes the defects to heat up, which is detected by a thermal camera (22). The ultrasonic energy is in the form of a pulse where the frequency of the ultrasonic signal is substantially constant within the pulse. A control unit (30) is employed to provide timing and control for the operation of the ultrasonic transducer (14) and the camera (22).
