    • A valve (1) for the air inlet manifold of an internal combustion engine comprises a housing having an internal chamber (13), an air inlet (5) and an air outlet (4), each communicating with the internal chamber (13), a valve closure (14) and a valve seat (18) located within the chamber (13) to selectively close the air inlet, the valve seat (18) being a distinct element from the housing and abutting against an internal face of the housing. The valve seat (18) can thus be one seat selected from a plurality of such seats, chosen to fit the already- determined requirements of a specific model of engine. A kit of parts for assembly into such a valve (1) Is also disclosed, comprising the parts necessary to make up the above valve (1), together with at least one additional valve seat having a different dimension to the first valve seat. Such a kit can be applied to a plurality of engines by selecting the appropriate valve seat.

    • The application discloses a control system for an internal combustion engine, comprising a plurality of sensors for measuring the engine condition and encoding this as current engine condition data, a data base of collected engine condition data and associated subsequent engine condition data, a processor means for interpreting the current engine condition data and locating within the data base equivalent collected engine condition data wherein the processor is adapted to retrieve from the data base the corresponding subsequent engine condition data, and engine condition adjustement means adapted to correct the engine condition toward an ideal state based on the said subsequent engine condition data. The engine condition adjustemnet means can be a simple engine management system, or a dedicated system comprising at least an inlet valve in the inlet manifold, and preferably also a water injection system. Preferably, the control system measures the lambda value of the engine together with the vacuum pressure and the rpm of the engine. The system imposes a lower air/fuel ratio if the change in the rpm measured over a predetermined period of time is below a predetermined level. Such periods of low rpm variability generally correspond to a cruise condition.

    • An automatic bleed valve is disclosed, suitable for attachment to the inlet manifold of an internal combustion engine in order to provide an effective embodiment of the "air bleed" principle. Small amounts of inlet air are allowed into the inlet manifold at periods of high vacuum (low pressure) present during deceleration. The valve closure (38) is biassed by a biassing means (36), e.g. a compressing spring, which acts on the face of the closure disposed away from the seat (22). Other aspects provide for a valve seat which is adjustable in position relative to the closure, a closure and seat of different plastics materials, and a closure with a conical aspect, preferably paired with a seat with a complementary contact portion.
