    • The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for providing a conveying path for advancing sheet articles between sheet processing apparatuses. Conventional apparatuses for providing conveying paths of varying lengths include a translatable extension table with a sliding belt/pulley arrangement. Such arrangements prevented complete abutment of the table with the downstream sheet processing apparatus and required manual adjustment of belt tension. The present invention overcomes these disadvantages through a novel extension apparatus. The extension apparatus (10) includes a base bracket (40) with a pair of rotatably movable spring-loaded bracket arms (44A, 44B) attached to a shaft (42) extending therethrough. A pair of bracket arms rollers (46A, 46B, 48A, 48B) are attached to each of the bracket arms. An extension plate (30) is positioned above and slidably movable on the base bracket, and a pair of rotatable extension rollers (20A, 20B) are rotatably attached to a shaft (22) extending through the extension plate such that slidable movement of the extension plate simultaneously and identically moves the extension rollers. A pair of rear rollers (R2, R4) are utilized and are operatively aligned with an extension roller and a pair of bracket arm rollers. A pair of belts extend at least partially around and operatively engage one of the rear rollers, one of the extension rollers, and a pair of the bracket arm rollers of one of the bracket arms. The belts have an upper reach section and a lower reach section between the rear rollers and the extension rollers, and the upper reach section of the belts from a conveying path for advancement of the sheet articles while the bracket arm rollers engage each belt in the lower reach section.

    • The invention is directed to a collector apparatus and method for collecting and advancing sheet articles in high speed media processing. A conventional collecting apparatus includes a collector plate with continuously running transport belts for advancing and collecting the sheets, movable stop brackets for stopping the sheets on the collector plate, and upper idler drop rollers for pressing the collected sheets against the belts to facilitate movement of the collected sheets. The conventional apparatus maintained continuous contact between the collected sheets and the continuously running sheets, leading to smearing of toner on the sheets and limited the sheet collecting capacity of the apparatus. The present invention overcomes these drawbacks by selectively inhibiting contact between the collected sheets and the transport mechanism. The collecting apparatus (10) includes a collector plate (12) having a sheet collection surface (14); movable stop brackets (20A, 20B) for temporarily stopping sheet advancement; upper idler stop rollers (52A, 52B) movable toward the collector plate; and a transport mechanism (B1, B2) movable through an opening in the collector plate to selectively advance the sheets.

    • A high-capacity collector apparatus (10) and method are provided for collecting sheet articles and advancing collected sheet articles. The collector apparatus includes a stage (50) for collecting a stack of sheet articles (S) advanced thereto wherein the stage is adjustable to accommodate sheet articles of various dimensions or sizes. Pusher/stop members are provided and are operable to stop sheet articles collected in a stack in the stage and to subsequently push the stack of sheet articles from the stage. The lug members of one pair of belts are adapted for providing a front stop for one stack of sheet articles collected in the stage, and for alternately moving to a rear ready position and then pushing another stack of collected sheet articles from the stage at a predetermined time.

The accumulator apparatus includes an upper belt system (4B) and lower belt system (LB) operative for advancing sheet articles in seriatim manner therebetween. Stop rollers (152, 156) are provided for selectively stopping futher advancement of accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location and for pulling the accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location to advance the sheet articles from the accumulator apparatus.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for collecting sheet articles, diverting or advancing the collected sheet articles and staging and further advancing the advanced sheet articles at a predetermined time. Conventional article processing apparatuses utilize solenoid divert gates, stop bracket/movable roller arrangements, lugged timing belt conveyors, and metal chain/push pin conveyors, which limited article processing speeds and increased machine complexity and wear. In accordance with the invention, a document collector, stager and diverter apparatus (10) and method are provided for processing sheet articles through first and second stages (20, 20') without utilizing the above devices. The first stage (20) receives sheet articles (SA) advanced thereto and collected therein and includes a first transport mechanism (22A, 22B) being operative for selectively diverting collected sheet articles in a divert direction opposite to the conveying direction of the sheet articles. Alternately, the first transport mechanism is operative for selectively advancing the collected sheet articles from the first stage to the second stage. In the second stage, sheet articles can be independently processed and held until a predetermined time when they can be advanced from the second stage by a second transport mechanism (22A', 22B'). The first and second transport mechanisms each preferably includes plastic chains each with plastic lugs (LA1-LB4') thereon. The chains of the first and second transport mechanisms are simultaneously rotatably movable by a motor (M, M') and gears (36A, 36B) or pulleys associated therewith.
