    • A system for controlling an electric motor includes a controller and a position indicator that provides position information regarding at least one motor component to the controller. The controller utilizes phase relationships indicative of the position information to determine the actual position of the component of interest. The phase information in one example is derived from the output of a resolver that provides two output signals corresponding to sin (θ) and cos (θ), where θ is the angular position. Utilizing the phase relationship simplifies the task of determining accurate position information that is useful to modify motor control signals to compensate for latency when making position determinations, velocity calculations or both. The inventive system makes it possible to use less expensive electronics to arrive at more reliable results.

    • A thrust bearing for a rotary machine includes first, second and third layers. The second layer includes a corrugated foil arranged between the first and third layers. The corrugated foil includes a wall having peaks engaging the first layer and valleys engaging the third layer. A depression is arranged in the wall between first and second peaks. The depression is spaced from the first and third layers. The first layer includes multiple arcuate top foils that are arranged adjacent to a thrust runner of a rotatable shaft. A corresponding number of arcuate corrugated foils may be used to support the top foils. The third layer, which is provided by an annular main plate, includes multiple arcuate spacers arranged circumferentially on the main plate. The spacers are generally aligned with a trailing edge of the top foils. The depressions decrease the stiffness of the bump foils. The spacers direct the axial load through the thrust bearing in a desired manner.

    • A support structure for a C-ring (34) includes a pair of circumferentially spaced holding members (37) on catch plates. The holding members may be moved individually into the C-ring after the C-ring is mounted within an outer housing (21). The two holding members thus provide support to an inner periphery of the C-ring. A locking plate (40) has support structure moved between circumferential ends of the housing members, thus providing effective support for the C-ring around its entire inner periphery. In this way, the two parts (21, 30) secured by the C-ring need not be moved relative to each other to insert the C-ring. The clearance or ability to move one of the two parts relative to the other which has been required in the past to mount a C-ring, is not necessary. This makes the inventive C-ring particularly useful for new applications, such as holding a porting sleeve within a valve housing.

    • A snow filter (10) for an airplane cabin air supply system is provided with a coned inlet screen (23) which allows some air to pass through and some snow to be retained. The coned configuration (22) diverts much of the air and snow toward a downstream conical retaining and collecting screen (26) positioned toward the outlet (30) of the snow filter. Snow is retained and collected at this point while air is able to pass through the screen (27). Downstream of the coned inlet screen and upstream of the conical retaining and collecting screen is an open air flow mid-portion (24) that enables tortuous flow of air as the snow is directed toward the conical retaining and collecting screen in an annular collection volume (160). The outlet of the snow filter is provided with a contact sleeve (32) that allows the snow filter to be fittingly received by a surrounding corresponding air duct. Thus a snow filter is provided that effectively separates snow from a flow of air while maintaining a clog-free path.

    • A propeller control system (20) provides for actuation through supply pressure only. A transfer bearing (38) thereby requires only a single land. The supply pressure is metered at a pitch change valve (40) within the rotating propeller shaft (28) downstream of the transfer bearing (38) to provide hydraulic pressure for actuation and control. A feather override mode is provided by energizing a feathering solenoid (44).
