    • An intelligent supervisory control system or neuro-user interface (NUI), and method that utilize bioelectric state of mind or cognitive profile to control electronic and mechanical resources in an environment, such as in a 3-D PC or console game, a simulation or virtual environment, a cockpit, automobile, home, or surgical theatre. The interface comprises means for acquiring the brain signals of a user or subject, which are converted into a digital stream and mathematically processed to define an electrical state of the mind or cognitive profile of the user. Incorporating microprocessor-based software and storage facilities, the interface dynamically maps the cognitive profile onto multiple functions, which are adaptable for actuating microprocessor commands. In conjunction with other standard input devices such as mouse, keyboard, or joystick, the intelligent supervisory control interface of the present invention thus provides a user with the maximal degrees of freedom for the control of the resources (or electrical and mechanical devices) in the environment.

    • An improved radio-frequency based catheter system and method for ablating biological tissues within the body vessel of a patient comprises a radio-frequency ("RF") generator for selectively generating high frequency energy in a deployable catheter having a RF co-axial transmission line with a hollow lumen, a RF antenna mounted on the distal portion of the catheter, and steering control lines in the lumen of the transmission line for steering catheter while being inserted into the body vessel and for deflecting the RF antenna to accommodate the contour of the body vessel where tissue ablation is needed. The RF generator having variable output frequency is adapted to generate and communicate RF energy to the RF antenna that minimizes reflected energy from the antenna-tissue interface. In application, the RF antenna establishes line of contact with the body vessel conformable to its internal contour to prescribe the precise tissue ablation pathway despite body vessel movements. The RF antenna is steered by the steering control lines to establish its body vessel conformation. The catheter system is energized and system senses the reflected RF power relative to its output power and adjusts the frequency of the power output to effect impedance match between the transmission line of the system and the tissue ablation load.

    • An improved distraction bone screw and a method for its use are described. The distraction screw is comprised of an implantable distal segment and a detachably secured proximal segment. The distal segment includes a head portion and a threaded shank portion. The proximal segment is represented as an elongated body having an internal bore that extends through its length. A deployable member is disposed within the bore, which is extendible outside the internal bore to securely couple to the distal segment. As an assembly, the distraction screw is used to affix and realign bone during surgical reconstruction. Upon completion of the surgical work, the proximal segment is removed and the distal segment is left attached to the reconstructed bone. Securely affixed, the distal segment provides an additional point of fixation for the skeletal plates that are used to preserve the bony alignment while bone healing occurs. The affixed distal segment will also provide a ready mechanism for distraction screw replacement at the time of surgical revision without obligatory plate removal. Different embodiments of the proximal segment, distal segment and the rotational locking mechanisms which inhibit the rotation of one segment relative to the other during deployment were also described. In addition, in cases where the distraction screw must be placed into the bone at an inclined angle, poly-axial heads were provided so that proper skeletal plate placement can still be accomplished.

    • A bone plating system is provided that permits maintenance of a compression force while also accommodating bony subsidence, among other features. Methods of implantation are also provided that improve alignment and placement during implantation and avoid maneuvers that weaken the vertebral bodies. A modular distraction screw is placed during the initial stages of surgery when all relevant landmarks are still intact. After completion of the surgical bone work, a proximal end of the distraction screw is detached, leaving a protruding distal segment implanted in the centerline of the vertebral bodies above and below the newly fused disc space. A bone plate is guided into proper position relative to the upper and lower vertebra by attaching the bone plate to the protruding distal segments. The distal segments of the distraction screws are tightened onto the plate and the plate is held stationary while bone screws are placed. The bone plating system is also extendable, allowing additional bone plates to be placed and coupled with existing plate components to create a multi-level plating system. Additional bone plates may be placed contemporaneously or during a subsequent surgical procedure.
