    • As opposed to using one type of technology from the beginning of a transaction to the end of a transaction at the point of sale, embodiments of the present invention are related to useful techniques for conducting mixed mode transactions. A mixed mode transaction combines at least two modes of communication used in transaction processing. A transaction may start by initiating the transaction using a first communication mode between a first device and a second device. The first device may be a consumers mobile device, and the device may be a merchant access device or point of sale terminal. To continue the transaction, a second mode of communication may be initiated. The second mode of communication may be dependent on the first mode or independent. The first and second modes of communication may operated simultaneously. The first and second communications modes may be a physical interaction-based mode, a contact or contactless chip mode, a Bluetooth mode, a WiFi mode, an infrared (IR) mode, or any other suitable communication mode.

    • Embodiments of the streamlined payment system described herein are directed to a consumer mobile device (e.g., a mobile phone) that sends transaction details for authorization, instead of the merchant sending the transaction details for authorization. This eliminates the need to present the consumer's payment account information to the merchant. The transaction details may include an amount and merchant payment initiation information. In one embodiment, the consumer mobile device may directly contact an issuer without using a traditional payment processing network. The issuer may then approve or deny the transaction and communicate directly with the issuer, merchant, or merchant's acquirer. In one embodiment, transaction details may need to be communicated from a computing device (e.g., a PC) operated by the consumer that is not collocated with the merchant. In this embodiment, the transaction details may be encoded into a particular format that can be received and read by the consumer's mobile device. The format may be a transaction details identifier or a transaction details data payload. The transaction details identifier or transaction details data payload may be an SMS or MMS message, barcode, watermarked image, or manual identifier that represents the transaction details. The SMS/MMS message with transaction details payload or identifier may be received by the mobile device. The barcode, text image, or watermarked image may be read using the mobile device's camera or other input means.

    • The utility of a portable consumer device is extended by allowing account holders the ability to gain entry into access-controlled venues (e.g., baseball or soccer game, cinema, public transit) using a portable consumer device that is associated with an account that was used to purchase the admission or tickets to the event at the access-controlled venue. Techniques disclosed allow cardholder authentication in a non-payment setting that enables cardholders access to a location or a specific event. A first validation cryptogram is generated in the purchase cycle and is stored. A second validation cryptogram is generated in the validation cycle at the venue. If the second validation cryptogram matches the first validation cryptogram, the consumer is granted access. Validation cryptograms may be based on input data that is specific to the payment card holder (e.g., primary account number), specific to the ticket selling merchant (e.g., merchant identifier), specific to the event (e.g., event identifier, date/time, location, etc.), and/or specific to the transaction (e.g., authorization code from a payment network). Based on the input data, validation cryptograms may be generated using encryption, hashing, a combination of encryption and hashing, and/or other operations on the input data.

    • Embodiments of the present invention are directed to systems, apparatuses and methods for using a mobile device with an accelerometer to conduct a financial transaction by making contact with an interaction terminal, thereby generating interaction data that is representative of the physical contact between the mobile device and the interaction terminal. The mobile device may be a mobile phone. The interaction terminal may be a point of sale terminal, access point device, or any other stationary (i.e., in a fixed position) device positioned at a line, door, gate, or entrance. A mobile device with an accelerometer physically contacts the interaction terminal. The interaction terminal flexes, recoils, or moves and generates interaction data (e.g., accelerometer, location, time data, etc.) representative of the physical interaction between the mobile device and the interaction terminal. A server computer determines, based on interaction data, that the mobile device and the interaction terminal made physical contact. After determining that the mobile device and the interaction terminal made contact, communication may be initiated between the devices. Communications may relate to processing a payment transaction using a payment processing network.
