摘要： A method for applying a security device (e.g., a micro-optic security thread) to a fibrous web during manufacture is provided. By way of the inventive method, the security device is preferably applied onto the fibrous web at or near a couch roll or similar tool of a paper machine when the fibrous web constitutes a sufficiently consolidated, fully formed wet web. Papers made in accordance with the inventive method, when subjected to the Circulation Simulation Test, showed minimal damage at the paper/security device interface. Moreover, the surface-applied security devices showed acceptable levels of intaglio ink adhesion, and the papers had higher cross-direction (CD) tensile strength and much less show-through on opposing sides thereof.

摘要： An electron therapy unit for delivering therapeutic electrons to a patient during an operation that is made up of a movable and stowable beam head that may be connected permanently or temporarily to either a base cabinet or a fixed structure using one or more optionally pivotable arms is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the inventive electron therapy unit is a mobile unit suitable for in-hospital use or for shared use between hospitals or clinics. The unit is self-contained, small, light and easy to use. It has a very reliable, compact design, allowing for easy stowing to a small rugged configuration for transport. In another exemplary embodiment, the inventive electron therapy unit is a stationary unit. An ion chamber for use with such an optionally transportable electron therapy unit is also provided. The ion chamber employs two or more collector plates and associated bias plates, each having a centrally located hole that extends through the plate. Further provided is a method for reducing or eliminating the possibility of significantly higher current caused by electrical arcs and power excursions during operation of the inventive electron therapy unit.

摘要： A security device for projecting a collection of synthetic images as well as a computer-implemented method for producing such a security device are provided. The synthetic images may represent different viewpoints of a target object or image that change from one viewpoint image to another viewpoint image as the location of the observer changes relative to the device. The nature of each synthetic image can, however, be completely arbitrary, much like the images that are provided by a display device such as a television or computer monitor. In an exemplary embodiment, a special symmetry is used to generate the synthetic images, which allows the device to be manufactured without regard for registration.

摘要： A robotic sharpening system and method for rapidly and accurately sharpening or resharpening cutting tools is provided. The inventive system employs a robotic arm that grasps each cutting tool by its cutting blade instead of by its handle, thereby reducing flex during the sharpening process. This results in a more accurate and consistent sharpening by consistently providing an even bevel at the knife edge regardless of minor imperfections (i.e., a bend or warp) in the blade surface. In addition, it renders the system uninfluenced by the size or shape of the handle of the cutting tool.
