    • Disclosed herein is an apparatus and method for deforming a sheet material. The apparatus includes a deforming roller (20) having a plurality of circumferential depressions (22) and at least one cord (26) in rotational engagement with the roller and adapted to press the material into the depressions. The method includes the steps of providing a rotating deforming roller (20) having circumferential depressions (22), at least one cord (26) aligned to fit within the depressions and at least one sheet material, and feeding the material in a first direction between the roller and cord and deforming the material by pressing it at least partially into the depressions with the cord. The deformation may include stretching or extending the material, and/or aperturing the material, and/or producing topographical shapes or surface features in the material.

    • The present invention provides a liquid repellent nonwoven protective material comprising a meltspun microfiber layer and one or more additional nonwoven layers bonded to the meltspun microfiber layer. The meltspun microfiber layer comprises a high melt flow rate olefin polymer (i.e., having a melt flow rate of at least 1500 grams per 10 minutes as measured by ASTM-D-1238-01 at 177 °C), a melt flow modifying agent and a liquid repellency internal additive. The high melt flow rate olefin polymer is substantially prodegradant-free and is present in amounts from about 78 percent by weight to about 94.9 percent by weight. The liquid repellency internal additive, such as a fluorochemical or fluoropolymer, is present in amounts from about 0.1 percent by weight to about 2 percent by weight, and the melt flow modifying agent, such as polymers and copolymers of butene, is present in amounts from about 5 percent by weight to about 20 percent by weight. The invention provides protective fabrics and garments such as medical products such as surgical drapes and gowns, and protective workwear garments from the liquid repellent nonwoven protective material. The invention additionally provides a process for making the nonwoven protective material.

    • Disclosed herein is a method for making fibrous web materials which may be used in or as absorbent core materials for absorbent products. The method involves providing loose fibers, entraining the fibers in a moving airstream, treating the fibers with an energy-activatable pre-polymer composition and subjecting the fibers to activation energy to initiate cross-linking of the composition. The fibers are collected on forming surface to form a fibrous web. The fibers may be treated with the composition while entrained in the moving air or after being collected on the forming surface, or in an alternate embodiment by treating with the composition a mat of fibers from which the loose fibers are provided. The fibrous web material may comprise cellulosic fibers such as pulp, and/or synthetic fibers such as staple fibers, and/or super absorbent materials.
