    • An apparatus and method for measuring the caliper of papermaking fabric (P) in a non-contacting manner on a papermaking machine is disclosed wherein a displacement meter unit (B) supported on a stand (40) adjacent a run of the papermaking fabric (P) in such a manner that the pair of opposed displacement meters (78, 80), may be aligned perpendicular to the opposing fabric surfaces for measuring their displacement. First and second displacement signals (88, 90) are generated which are processed to, provide a caliper signal representing the thickness of the fabric (P) which can be used to indicate its condition for dewatering performance. A universal coupling (48) mounts the displacement meter unit (B) on the stand (40) so that the apparatus may be aligned for different inclinations of fabric runs.

    • An apparatus for monitoring the dewatering performance of a forming section of a papermaking machine (10) includes a laser measurement assembly (A) having at least one laser displacement meter (40) supported above a paper forming fabric (12) which carries paper stock (P). The laser meter (40) is located at a laser reference position, and generates a displacement signal representing a first distance between the paper stock and laser reference position. A carrier stand (B, BI) is provided for carrying the laser meter and a baseline reference device (42, 120) which provides a baseline reference position against which the displacement signal is analyzed to provide a paper stock thickness signal representing the amount of water present. A controller (100) receives the displacement signal and, together with the baseline reference measurement from either a second laser meter (42) or a contact element (120) processes an output value indicating the thickness of the paper stock, and hence the water content of the paper stock.

    • A woven fabric for use in papermaking machines and particularly with through air drying machines. The fabric comprises a paper support surface (A) having spaced diagonal rows (40) of uncompressed paper forming fibers over the surface of paper formed on the papermaking machine. The rows of pockets (B) are separated by diagonal strips (44) of support surface arranged along substantially a single plane. The diagonal strips provide support areas over the width of the paper forming fibers which firmly secure the fiber sheet with the papermaking fabric during paper forming. The strips also produce diagonal rows of compressed paper forming fibers which provide for a more stable paper product.
