    • A supercharging arrangement for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The supercharging arrangement comprises a supercharger having a rotational drive input, and a transmission having a rotational drive input to receive drive from an internal combustion engine, and a rotational drive output connected to the input of the supercharger. The transmission includes a variator operatively connected between the input and the output of the transmission, which variator has an output that is driven at an operating ratio from an input. There is a control system that operates to cause an engine to deliver an amount of torque that is indicated by the state of an input to the control system. The control system is further operative to set the operating ratio of the variator.

    • In a toroidal variator a plurality of rolling elements (20, 22) are in driving engagement with an input and output race (10, 14) at respective contact regions. Each rolling element (20, 22) is mounted on a carriage assembly (26) for rotation about a rolling axis, and is being free to pivot about a tilt axis, the tilt axis passing through the rolling element (20, 22) perpendicular to the rolling axis, and intersecting the rolling axis at a roller centre, whereby a change in the tilt axis causes a change in the variator ratio being the ratio of rotational speeds of the races. The tilt axis is arranged at an angle known as castor angle (see Fig.4) to a plane (P) perpendicular to the variator axis (V). Each carriage assembly (26) can cause a movement of the rolling element (20, 22) with a component of rotation about a pitch axis (A, B). The pitch axis is defined as passing through the roller centre and through the contact regions. Pitching the roller elements (20, 22) causes them to tilt, thereby changing the transmission ratio.

    • The present invention provides a continuously variable transmission having a variator (5) comprising input discs (2) coupled to an input shaft (12) and an output disc (3) providing a rotary variator output. The input and output discs are mounted for rotation about a common axis and at least one roller (4) is arranged between the discs to transfer drive from one to the other at a continuously variable variator drive ratio. The roller is mounted in a carrier (30) in a manner which permits it to spin about its own axis and to tilt relative to the disks to vary the variator drive ratio. A hydraulic actuator (22) is arranged to apply to the carrier (30) a reaction force determined by a hydraulic pressure difference acting on the actuator. The reaction force opposes a traction force applied to the roller (4) by the action of the discs (2, 3). Power-recirculation gearing (6), preferably in the form of planetary gearing, receives as inputs the rotation of the input shaft (12) and the rotary variator output, and produces an output speed which is a function of both its inputs. The transmission further comprises a low / high switching mechanism (10) which comprises a low clutch L and a high clutch H and which serves to switch between (a) a low regime in which the low clutch is engaged and the output of the power- recirculation gearing is transmitted to an output shaft and (b) a high regime in which the high clutch is engaged and rotation of the variator output is transmitted to the output shaft. The direction of the reaction force of the hydraulic actuator is reversed during switching between low and high regime. In accordance with the invention, the transmission further comprises an engagement control (37) which begins to engage the disengaged clutch (H or L) when the transmission reaches a condition at which regime change is to be initiated. A reaction force switching control (38) begins reversal of the direction of the reaction force while the disengaged clutch is being engaged. A rapid and potentially smooth regime change is achieved. In a particularly preferred embodiment, a one-way clutch is provided between the input-side member of the high clutch and an input-side member of the low clutch, ensuring that the speed of the latter cannot become greater than the speed of the former.

    • The invention concerns a simple mechanical arrangement for controlling a multi- regime continuously variable transmission. The transmission in question comprises a variator (10) and a gearing arrangement including a low regime clutch (CL) and a high regime clutch (CH). Engaging the low regime clutch places the transmission in the low regime. Engaging the high regime clutch places it in the high regime. The control system comprises a control part (such as a lever) which is movable by the user along a control path from a low ratio end to a high ratio end. The position of the control part dictates variator ratio and transmission ratio. The system further incorporates a low regime clutch control device which engages the low regime clutch when the control part is between the low ratio end of its path and a low clutch transition point, and which releases the low regime clutch when the control part is between the low clutch transition point and the high ratio end of its path. It additionally incorporates a high regime clutch control which releases the high regime clutch when the control part is between the low ratio end of its path and a high clutch transition point, and which engages the high regime clutch when the control part is between the high clutch transition point and the high ratio end of its path. In this way, a mechanical arrangement can be provided which manages both transmission ratio and the clutch changes required upon regime change.

    • The invention is concerned with a continuously variable transmission incorporating a variator of the type having at least two co-axial races (D1-D4) between which drive is transferred at a continuously variable variator ratio. The variator races are mounted for rotation about a variator shaft (16). The transmission has a layshaft (18) which is laterally separated from the variator shaft. It has two epicyclic gears. A splitter epicyclic (14) has an input member driven from the transmission input (10) and two output members arranged respectively to drive the layshaft and the variator shaft. A recirculater epicyclic has first and second input members for coupling respectively to the variator shaft and to the layshaft and a recirculater output member. An arrangement of clutches is provided for selectively engaging any of at least three regimes. In one regime the recirculater output member drives the transmission output. In another the layshaft drives the transmission output. In a third, the variator shaft drives the transmission output. The arrangement of the components is such that the variator shaft is co-axial with the transmission output, the recirculater epicyclic, a first coupling, between the recirculater output member and the transmission output, which serves to drive the transmission output in the first regime, and a second coupling, between the variator shaft and the transmission output, which serves to drive the transmission output in the third above-mentioned regime.

    • The invention is concerned with control of a continuously variable vehicle transmission. The transmission in question is to have a variator (10) which is coupled between a rotary transmission input (32) and a rotary transmission output (46), to provide continuous variation in a transmission drive ratio, via a launch device such as a clutch (62; 68). The variator and the launch device are constructed and arranged to exert a required torque, defined by an input signal. In accordance with the invention, the same control signal is used to control both the variator torque and the torque capacity of the launch device. In such an arrangement, vehicle launch (i.e. moving away from rest) can be controlled in a straightforward manner by progressively raising the relevant control signal, preferably a hydraulic pressure signal. Further independent claims are including for applying traction load to races (20, 22) of the variator and for a method setting torque of the launch device (62; 68) higher than torque of the variator (10).

    • A continuously variable transmission is disclosed comprising a transmission input and output between which a variator (V) can be coupled, in either a low regime or a high regime, by gearing (R1, R2, R3, M). The relationship between variator ratio and overall transmission ratio is different in the two regimes. Incorporated in the gearing are first and second clutch means (L, H) both hydraulically actuated, for engaging and disengaging low and high regimes respectively. The gearing provides a synchronous ratio at which a change between low and high regimes, at constant variator ratio, provides no change in the overall transmission ratio. The transmission is provided with hydraulics which incorporate a shift valve (110) which controls application of hydraulic pressures to the first and second clutch means. A change in state of the shift valve (110) causes one clutch means to change from engaged to disengaged and the other to make the opposite transition. In this way changes of transmission regime are hydraulically controlled.
