摘要： An electronic book (100) comprising a plurality of leaves (120), each leaf (120) comprising pages of printed material (126) bound at one edge to form a spine (140) with electrical circuits (123) formed in each leaf (120). A common electronic circuit (160) such as a speech generator and/or controller (168) cooperates with the electrical circuits (123) on each of the various pages, connected to the electrical circuits (123) in the leaves (120) through conductive paths (101) through the spine (140) of the book (100). The electrical circuits (123) in the leaves (120) include electrical elements such as switches (127), (129), and sensory output devices (125) (e.g., thermochromic devices, light emitting diodes, thermo-olfactory devices, electrochromic devices, and the like). The electrical elements (127), (129) are associated with particular portions of the printed material (126) so that the particular portions can be selectively highlighted or emphasized (e.g., designated by actuation of a visual or olfactory device and/or text read). A particularly advantageous switch structure formed integral to the page employing standard printing techniques, the bonding of LEDs directly into the printed circuit (112), and various advantageous methods of construction of the book (100) are also disclosed.

摘要： A circuit in one embodiment of the present invention includes an integrated circuit (10) and a folded substrate (1). The folded substrate includes first and second circuit portions (5, 6). The first and second circuit portions are printed and aligned when the substrate is folded, to cooperate as a switch (13, 14) for providing an input signal to the integrated circuit. In a further variation, a fifth and sixth circuit portion are printed and aligned when the substrate is folded to cooperate as a speaker (11, 12) for vibrating a portion of the substrate at an audio frequency. In yet another variation, a piezoelectric element (34) is mounted on the substrate and coupled to the integrated circuit for vibrating a portion of the substrate at an audio frequency.

The first and second circuit portions are printed and aligned when the substrate is folded, to cooperate as a battery. In a first variation a third and fourth circuit portion are printed and aligned when the substrate is folded to cooperate as a switch for providing an input signal to the integrated circuit. In a further variation, a fifth and sixth circuit portion are printed and aligned when the substrate is folded to cooperate as a speaker for vibrating a portion of the substrate at an audio frequency. In yet another variation, a piezoelectric element is mounted on the substrate and coupled to the integrated circuit for vibrating a portion of the substrate at an audio frequency.

摘要： An electronic book apparatus that comprises multiple pages (122) with printed information (126), visual signal means (125) for identifying the printed information in a sequentially organized manner, synchronized audio signal means (154) for describing and further identifying the information concurrently with the visual signal means, and switching means (127) for electronically controlling the generation and transmission of these signals when each particular page is opened for viewing. Each page of the electronic book includes a laminated sheet (124), on which the printed material is arranged, and an electronic backdrop (121) containing the visual signal means for display through the laminated sheet. Separaate intelligent electronic means (160) in the spine (140) and top portion (150) of the book, coupled to the switching means, activate the illuminating circuitry and a voice synthesizer (168) that are synchronized and sequenced to produce a concurrent visual and audio enhancement of the printed matter being viewed on the page. The apparatus controls the presentation in a predetermined seqence deemed appropriate to enhance comprehension of the material and, if desired, provide entertainment. In one embodiment of the invention, the user is provided at each page with alternative options to repeat certain sequences or continue through the book.
