    • This invention relates to a fluid flow control method that enables a self-propelled irrigation machine to apply varying amounts of fluid as might be required to suitably treat the surface area affected by each of the individual fluid application devices thereon. The control method regulates the total volume of fluid emitted by each application device to a predetermined value as it responds to a suitable control signal to permit or prevent fluid flow. This fluid flow control method involves time-based rapid cycling of the flow control apparatus to provide continuously variable fluid flow as is required to meet the desired average output of each emitting device as the flow requirement varies from time to time as needed to produce a selected, pre-determined application rate throughout the treated surface area.

    • A regulator valve (136) has a housing with a seal member (146). First (158) and second plunger (178) are movable in the housing toward and away from the seal member (146) and are biased away by a spring (156). First (176) and second diaphragms (204) connect the plungers to the inner wall of the housing so that fluid must flow through the passages (162, 182). The diaphragms (176, 204) define an expansion chamber (206) with plunger and housing walls. Pressure introduced into this chamber (206) can be used to force the first plunger (158) into engagement with the seal (146), overriding the spring (156), thus closing the valve.

    • A regulator (21) is shown for controlling pressure as well as for selectively fully enabling or stopping flow. A valve housing (23) includes inlet (25) and an outlet (27) and a seat (33) in between, the flow past which is controlled by valve (71). A control housing (41) is attached to the valve housing (23).
