    • A fluid sensor comprises a solid state laser comprising a solid state laser gain material in a laser cavity, wherein light emitted from the laser gain material is resonant in the laser cavity. The fluid sensor further comprises means for modulating light in the laser cavity to induce an acoustic or pressure wave caused by absorption of the resonant wave, and means located in the laser cavity for detecting the acoustic or pressure wave. The fluid sensor may be used for detecting a fluid such as a gas. The fluid sensor may be operable to detect very low levels of gas leaking from the surface of the earth or fugitive from a man-made object such as a processing plant. As an example, the gas may be ethane.

    • A photoacoustic sensor for detecting traces of hydrocarbons (e.g. ethane) in gases or liquids is disclosed. The sensor comprises an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) having a non-linear material (e.g. periodically poled lithium niobate crystal) adapted to convert via a parametric process pump light into down converted light of two different wavelengths (e.g. signal (-1.600 nm) and idler (preferably in the range of 3200-3400 nm)), wherein the non-linear material is provided in a down converted wave cavity arranged to resonate only one of the first or second wavelengths. The sensor also comprises means for modulating light (e.g. an etalon, grating, piezoelectric transducer (PZT)) in the down converted wave cavity to induce an acoustic or pressure wave caused by absorption of the resonant one of the first and second wavelengths. The means for modulating light may also modulate the primary power source (amplitude or frequency). The sensor further comprises means located in the down converted wave cavity for detecting the acoustic or pressure wave (preferably a quartz tuning fork having a microresonator tube).

    • A method for determining range and velocity information for a collection of moving scatterers comprises frequency modulating and/or phase modulating continuous wave light to form a modulated signal beam. The method comprises transmitting the modulated signal beam to the collection of scatterers, detecting light back-scattered by the collection of scatterers, and analysing the detected signal using a matched filter to provide range and velocity information for the collection of scatterers. The scatterers may comprise atmospheric aerosols. The system may be used to provide a measure of wind speed and/or a measure of air turbulence.
