    • A device for creasing card comprises a rotary drum (2) and two wheels (4, 6) mounted adjacent to the drum (2), such that a sheet of card may be fed first between the drum (2) and one of the wheels (6) then between the drum (2) and the other of the wheels (4). A crease is formed in the card between a rib (22) on the drum (2) and a groove (16) in each of the wheels (4, 6) or between a groove in the drum (2) and a rib on each of the wheels (4, 6). The provision of two wheels (4, 6) helps to reduce cracking and improve the straightness of the crease. A resilient creasing strip (20) for a creasing device has a front surface along which is a creasing rib (22) and a rear surface along which is a locating rib (24) for locating the strip (20) in a pre-existing circumferential groove (12) in the drum (2) of the creasing device. The creasing strip (20) may further comprise a pad (26) at each end, by which the strip may be adhered to the drum (2) of the creasing device.

    • There is described a machine for scoring a line of weakness on a film web (5), the machine comprising a scoring blade (1) which can be positioned to score one surface of the film web (5) without cutting through the film web, characterized in that: (a) the blade is constructed so two sides of the blade which are parallel to the longest axis of the blade and disposed either of the thinness axis of the blade converge to meet substantially along a single line which defines a scoring edge of the blade and where the angle between the two sides along the scoring edge (denoted herein as the `blade angle' or 0) is from about 45° to about 75° (preferably 60°); (b) the blade is positioned relative to the web so a plane defined by bisecting the blade angle (0) forms a further angle to the film web (denoted herein as the `blade orientation angle' or ß) of from about 70° to about 110° (preferably 90°); and (c) the scoring end of the blade is shaped so the blade has end region defined by the cutting edge, the blade sides and an end plane parallel to the film web, where the end plate (3) is separated from the cutting edge by a distance of about 50% of the thickness of the web to be scored as measured along the bisector of the blade angle and where both sides of the blade are substantially linear throughout the end region. In a preferred aspect of the present invention, there is provided a machine which further comprises a stopper surface located close to the blade in the MD of the web characterized in that: (d)(i) the cutting edge of the blade is spaced from a leading edge of the surface at a minimum distance (D or 16) along an axis perpendicular to the web, where D is less than or equal to about 80% of the thickness of the film web to be scored; and (d)(ii) the surface is inclined away from the film web at the leading edge so the surface and the plane of the web form an acute angle alpha (a, 22) of from about 1 ° to about 30°. Methods of film scoring, films so-scored and packaging wrapped with scored film are also described.

    • A V-cutter for use in forming V-shaped grooves (3) on a light guide panel (1) of the backlight unit for a liquid crystal display (LCD) is disclosed. The V-cutter may include a Z-axis lift piece (7) and a W-axis lift piece (8), each of which has a pin kit (10a, 10b) with a plurality of pins (9a, 9b) attached at the bottom thereof. The pins (9a, 9b) are preferably equal in number and spacing to the V-shaped grooves (3) to be formed. The lift pieces (7, 8) may be vertically actuated by a Z-axis controller (5) and a W-axis controller (6). The light guide panel (1) is preferably fixtured to a table (11). The lift pieces (7, 8) are configured to move with respect to the table (11) so that, through successive X-axis and Y-axis operations, the V-shaped grooves can be formed in perpendicular directions with only two reciprocating motions. As a result, the manufacturing cost of the light guide panels (1) is reduced.

    • A method and apparatus that produces shaped and laminate articles and recovers the excess material or flash (207) as a part of the manufacturing process. The apparatus uses a combination of rotary die (201) and anvil roller (203) assemblies in successive multiple stations to cut and separate each raw material into final product portions (206) and recyclabe flash portions (207) as each raw material enters the apparatus. The apparatus separately reclaims each raw material flash portion and delivers the flash of each material in a recyclable form to an auxiliary recycling operation. In recovering the flash (207), the apparatus does not adversely affect the speed or quality of production of the final shaped or laminated product. To ease removal of the flash, the apparatus applies lubricant to the blades of the rotary die. To avoid damage to web material, the apparatus uses vacuum belts to convey the web material and web product through the apparatus.
