    • An ultra bright, low wattage inductively coupled electrodeless aperture lamp is powered by a solid state RF source in the range of several tens to several hundreds of watts at various frequencies in the range of 400 to 900 MHz. Numerous novel lamp circuits and components are disclosed including a wedding ring shaped coil having one axial and one radial lead, a high accuracy capacitor stack, a high thermal conductivity aperture cup and various other aperture bulb configurations, a coaxial capacitor arrangement, and an integrated coil and capacitor assembly. Numerous novel RF circuits are also disclosed including a high power oscillator circuit with reduced complexity resonant pole configuration, parallel RF power FET transistors with soft gate switching, a continuously variable frequency tuning circuit, a six port directional coupler, an impedance switching RF source, and an RF source with controlled frequency-load characteristics. Numerous novel RF control methods are disclosed including controlled adjustment of the operating frequency to find a resonant frequency and reduce reflected RF power, controlled switching of an impedance switched lamp system, active power control and active gate bias control.

    • A light source suitable for use with an image reader comprises a dielectric barrier discharge fluorescent lamp capable of emitting light in response to an external synchronizing signal without a variation in the amount of light. A phase comparator (13) compares the phase of an external synchronous signal (Sync) with the phase of a signal generated by a variable-frequency oscillator (11) and divided by a frequency divider (12), and controls the frequency of the variable-frequency oscillator (11) according to the phase difference. As a result, the phase of the variable-frequency oscillator (11) is locked to the phase of the external synchronizing signal (Sync). The signal from the variable-frequency oscillator (11) is supplied to a gate signal generator (5), the output from which turns on and off a switching element in an inverter circuit (3) to convert DC voltage from a DC source (5) to AC voltage. The AC voltage output from the inverter circuit (3) is applied to a lamp (1) through a stepup transformer (2) to light the lamp (1).

    • A lamp electronic ballast (12, 12a) with a piezoelectric cooling fan (10, 10a, 10b, 60). Use of ballast-driven lamps (14) is limited in some lighting applications by thermal considerations. For example, the problem of heat removal from compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballasts has limited their use. Similarly, the use of ballast-driven fluorescent lighting in high hat and other closed luminaire applications has been limited by thermal considerations. Thermal management of ballasts for such thermally sensitive applications is provided by a piezoelectric fan (10, 10a, 10b, 60) integrated with the ballast (12, 12a). The power to drive the fan (10, 10a, 10b, 60) may be obtained from the same AC line input that supplies the ballast (12, 12a), or from an AC ripple voltage present at the output of a rectifier (24) in the ballast, or from the output (31) of the ballast to the lamp (14), or from any suitable circuit location in the ballast. The fan (62) may be a membrane-type spot-cooler comprising a thin membrane (62) carried by a frame (64) mounted adjacent a hot spot. The membrane (62) has one or more holes (68, 68a) in it and is vibrated about a central plane by suitably spaced piezoelectric elements (66) attached to the membrane (62).

    • An electronic ballast having an RF resonant inverter and RF feedback from the inverter which provides power factor correction. The feedback is provided by a capacitor coupled between the RF resonant tank circuit of the resonant inverter and a low frequency point in the ballast. Such feedback integrates the power factor correction stage with the RF resonant inverter stage and eliminates a switch and its controller. Electronic ballasts operating at RF frequencies require fast switching isolation diodes. Ultra-fast silicon diodes with very short recovery times, which have been used as such isolation diodes, are sensitive to ambient temperature and deteriorate the power factor and total line current harmonic distortion of the ballast. Use of either GaAs or silicon carbide isolation diodes instead of silicon diodes provides the ballast with a high power factor and a low total harmonic distortion.
