摘要： A sensor device (20) for detecting whether a tractor and a trailer (14) of a truck (10) are connected includes a container having a plurality of tabs (26) extending radially outwardly to engage an inside surface of a bearing plate (62) of the trailer (14) when the container is located in a hole (80) in the bearing plate (62). A spring (24) extends from a base of the container away from the face surface to bear upon an interior wall of the trailer to bias the tabs into contact with the inside wall when the container is located in the hole to maintain a position of the container therein. A sensor (60) is also provided for sensing proximity of a ferrous material and being located in the container. The sensor (60) senses proximity of ferrous material of a coupler carried by the tractor without sensing ferrous material of the bearing plate (62).

摘要： A skin treatment formulation, e.g. in the form of an ointment or gel or a skin dressing, comprises a photocatalytic agent, e.g. flavine mononucleotide, and an electron donor substance, e.g. ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, conveniently in the form of an agar gel (10). On exposure to light in the presence of oxygen (e.g. from the ambient atmosphere) the photocatalytic agent acts to cause conversion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide. If this reaction occurs on or in the vicinity of skin, the hydrogen peroxide so produced can have a localised antibacterial effect. By controlling exposure to light, so hydrogen peroxide can be generated in situ in the vicinity of skin in a way that has not hitherto been possible.

摘要： Apparatus for detecting a specific target odour comprises: a detector unit adapted to have removably associated therewith a holding unit for housing at least one insect in a predetermined position; means for exposing an insect in a holding unit associated with the detector unit to a sample of gas to be tested; and means for enabling monitoring of a response of the insect to the sample thereby to detect a response indicative of the target odour. In use of the apparatus, a holding unit housing at lest one insect that responds in a detectable manner to the target odour is associated with the detector unit. A sample of gas to be tested is supplied to the apparatus, for exposure to the insect or insects in the holding unit. The insect is monitored for a response indicative of the target odour, thus enabling determination as to whether or not the target odour is present in the sample. Because the holding unit is not part of the detector unit but is removably associated with therewith, the holding unit can be used to transport an insect or insects housed therein from a first, remote location, e.g. where insects are raised and conditioned, to a point of use at a second location where the detector unit is located. The detector unit may be a permanent or semi-permanent fixture at a point of use, or may be in the form of a portable unit. Also disclosed is a method of detecting a specific target odour.

摘要： An insect holder for holding an insect of a particular type, e.g. a forager honey bee, comprises a housing with a chamber adapted to receive an insect of the particular type, an inlet to the chamber through which an insect of the particular type can pass to enter the chamber, a head opening to the chamber adapted to permit the head of an insect of the particular type in the chamber to pass therethrough to the exterior of the housing while retaining the insect in the housing, and retaining means for retaining an insect of the particular type in the chamber with the head of the insect protruding through the head opening to the exterior of the housing, such that the insect is unable to turn around in the chamber. In use, an insect of the particular type enters the chamber via the inlet, and is then retained in the holder by the retaining means. The insect is retained in the chamber, with its head protruding through the head opening of the chamber. The insect is constrained to be unable to turn around in the chamber or withdraw its head into the chamber, so the head of the insect must remain outside the chamber. The insect is thus held in the holder with the head visible, so that observations can be made on the insect head, e.g. monitoring proboscis movement in known manner. When observations are finished, the retaining means can be removed or deactivated so that the insect is able to leave the chamber, with the insect unharmed and undamaged.

A true ileal amino acid digestibility is used in conjunction with an amino acid derivatising reaction to determine the true ileal digestibility of the amino acid. The amino acid concentration in a diet and digesta is then determined. Co-efficients derived using the assay and the amino acid content of the foodstuff can then be used to calculate the available amino acid content of the foodstuff.
