    • The invention relates to a moisture sensor (100) for detecting relative atmospheric moisture. The inventive sensor comprises a moisture-sensitive element which undergoes a size change under the influence of atmospheric moisture. Said size change can cause bending of a section pertaining to an optical fibre (1). A change of the light flux through the optical fibre is a result of the extend of the bending, whereby said change is present as a measurable reference quantity in the form of measurable subduing of light of the optical fibre. The moisture-sensitive element is a so-called small hygro band (2) that moves a rounded head (10, 10'. 10'') over a gearbox. Said head presses against the section of the optical fibre (1) and thus causes subduing of light of the optical fibre, whereby said section has to be bend and pertains to the optical fibre.

    • A hygrostat suitable for use burying in the soil near a plant (for example, a pot-plant) which employs a hygroscopic element of a coherent polymer that is preferably arranged to be in direct contact with the soil and to have no lost motion as it expands or contracts so that soil cannot interpose itself at the ends of the element. A hygrostat system and method for delivering water to the surface of the soil at a fixed distance from a buried hygrostat unit are also disclosed. In the example shown in the figure, the hygrostat unit comprises: an upper chamber (12) shaped like an inverted cup which is closed by a diaphragm and which has water inlet/outlet spigots (16) extending from its top; a lower frame (18) that is shaped like an inverted stirrup having a lower arch (20) and an integrally-moulded upper snapring (22) which fits inside the rim of chamber (14); a strip-form polymeric hygroscopic element (24) which is clipped at its lower end to a key-stone protrusion (26) at the bottom of frame (18); and, a pair of guide rails (28) on each side of element (24) which serve to stiffen the element against buckling, the upper ends of rails (28) being joined together by a foot (30) to which the upper end of element (24) is clipped and which is itself attached to the diaphragm by "pull-through" studs (32), the lower ends of rails (18) being free to slide over keystone (26) while being laterally located thereby.

    • A humidity indicator consists of a beaker-like housing (1) with an inside pocket (6) containing a hygroscopic salt (9), a wick (8) extending from the bottom of the pocket (6), up around its top edge and down to a level below its bottom above a vessel (12) formed in the bottom part of the housing (1). When an air-tight cap (5) is removed or replaced upside-down allowing air to enter through slits (10), the humidity in the ambient air contacts the salt (9), and if the relative humidity is equal to or higher than the deliquescence threshold of the salt (9), the latter will absorb water from the air, after which this water with the salt dissolved in it will be transported by the wick (8) into the lower vessel (12). The quantity of salt or liquid transported is a measure of the total duration of those time intervals, during which the relative humidity has been at least equal to the deliquescence level of the salt (9).
