    • The invention relates to an inflatable unit for underwater breathing apparatuses for divers, comprising a diffuser device made at least partially of porous material, wherein the diffuser device has at least one filter element (5), which is closed on the face and is made of a porous sintered plastic material. The porosity of the sintered plastic material is in the range of 80 to 130 micrometers. The filter element (5) is, or the filter elements (5) are attached to the bubble deflector (2), or to the bubble deflectors (2), at an angle (8) ranging from 45 to 60 degrees to the center line (9) of the diving regulator (1) extending parallel to the longitudinal direction of the diver. The invention results in a very significant reduction in the exhalation acoustics for open diving equipment.

    • A pressure activated device for controlling the supply of a gas and a breathing system for underwater use incorporating the device are provided. The device comprises an input port (64) for connection to a pressurised gas supply, an output port (66), a chamber (62) and a pressure monitoring port (66). Flow control means are provided for selectively opening a fluid path (65) outside the chamber between the input port and the output port when the ambient pressure is higher than the pressure in the chamber by a more predetermined amount. Reset means (80) selectively open a fluid path (84, 92) between the pressure monitoring port and the chamber, when the pressure at the pressure monitoring port is higher than the ambient pressure by more than a predetermined amount. The device may be used to control the supply of diluent gas to an underwater breathing system, or to maintain the volume of a flexible enclosure substantially constant, irrespective of variations in the ambient pressure.

    • Presented is a sub-tidal volume rebreather (STVR) and various embodiments that extend the useful range and/or reduce the encumbrance of any breathable gas, whether filtered, compressed, or otherwise, used by a diver, serviceman, fireman, or other user of such equipment. In an exemplary embodiment the second stage regulator (Reg2) of the rebreather (STVR) is connected via an ambient pressure breathing tube (APTR) to an overpressure relief valve (ORV), which is again connected to a sub- tidal volume counter lung (STVcI) via a C02 absorbent canister (Scrub). During each exhalation, upon maximum inflation of the sub-tidal volume counter lung (STVcI), the overpressure relief valve (ORV) releases the heavily C02 laden back portion of the user' s respiratory tidal volume (RTV) before it reaches the C02 absorbent chemical in its canister (Scrub).

    • An aquatic breathing apparatus includes a buoyancy vest for aquatic breathing. The vest includes a weight-bearing back portion positionable adjacent a back of a user and a front portion positionable adjacent the chest. The front portion includes a support element adapted for removably affixing an air tank thereto. The support element is positioned for resting adjacent a sternum. A buoyancy element is housed within the front portion, and a pair of side straps is provided wherein each side strap is affixable to connect the front and the back portion to respective opposed sides thereof. A system for aquatic breathing includes the buoyancy vest and an air tank and a regulator. The regulator comprises a hose that is connected in fluid communication at a first end to the air tank and at a second end to a mouthpiece. The hose is supported by a second support element on the vest.

    • A two piece (20, 22) mounting system is disclosed. For a marine application, as, for example, mounting a pair of air tanks (10, 12) together, a first piece (20) is attached to one tank and a second piece (22) is attached to the other tank. A pair of cooperatively dimensioned cavities (48, 84) and protrusions (54, 90) on the front of both pieces permit easy and rapid mounting of the first piece to the second piece. A built-in spring loaded, indexing plunger mechanism (72) automatically locks the two pieces together at an automatically predetermined positioned dictated by the length of one protrusion and a built-in stop (112) in a cavity. Quick dismounting is permitted by simply displacing the handle (208) on the plunger mechanism. A number of other applications, including mounting a fire extinguisher to a wall, is discussed.
