    • An exercise machine (10) has an operator position (11) and preferably two movable handles (16, 17), a transmission system (18 to 23) connected to the handles (16, 17) and a motion resistance arrangement (24) drivingly connected to the transmission system (18 to 23), whereby movement of the handles (16, 17) is transmitted by the transmission system (18 to 23) to cause movement of the resistance arrangement (24). The position of the handles (16, 17) is adjustable relative to the operator position (11) and the transmission system (18 to 23). Preferably, the motion of the handles (16, 17) is rotational, and the plane of rotation of each handle (16, 17) is adjustable. In addition, the position of the handles (16, 17) relative to each other, and the radius of rotation of the handles (16, 17), are adjustable. A single machine (10) provides that movement of the handles (16, 17) is effected by differing motions performed by the operator to facilitate the performance of differing exercises.

    • A vehicle with a caster (12) has a disconnectable steering system so the vehicle can be quickly and easily converted back and forth between rider-steerable and externally steerable configurations. When the disconnecting device connects the steering mechanism to the caster, the vehicle can be steered by the occupant since the steering mechanism and caster rotate as one unit. When the disconnecting device disconnects the steering mechanism from the caster, the caster is allowed to swivel freely (360 DEG ) about its vertical axis so that the vehicle can be pushed or pulled in any direction by an external operator.     • The present invention is directed to a device for applying torque-controlled eccentric training to a human muscular system and includes means for applying a torque transfer to the human muscular system, display means for displaying decelaration power data produced by the muscular system in resisting the torque transfer, and means for detecting and processing decelaration data for adjusting the torque transfer to the human muscular system. In one aspect of the invention, the means for applying a torque transfer includes a drive motor coupled to a turning or pedal crank. The present invention also includes a method for torque-controlled eccentric exercice training using the previously described device which includes selecting operation parameters at the turning crank, processing measured data that is detected; monitoring operation conditions of the drive motor; displaying produced decelaration power and operation parameters at the turning crank on a display device; and controlling the drive motor according to selected operation conditions.

    • The invention relates to magnetorheological (MR) fluid devices (20) and the process of controlling the force in exercise equipment by utilizing the MR fluid devices. The MR fluid devices include rotary and linear acting varieties and are useful for controlled forces in exercise bicycles, recumbent exercisers, ski machines, rowing machines, and stair stepper machines. The rotary MR fluid device is comprised of a rotor (26) supported by bearings (44) and received within a housing (22). An MR fluid is received adjacent the rotor (26) and within a cavity (28) in the housing (22) and the MR fluid is controlled by an applied magnetic field to vary the operating torque resistance. Spring biasing (43) the rotor (26) allows for relaxed tolerances. Optimization of the Ri/Ro ratio is described which reduces the size and weight of the device (20). The linear acting version utilizes simple extensible pumps and an external MR fluid valve to provide a modularized system.
