    • A base station generates and transmits a multi-symbol beacon/timing synchronization signal. The multi-symbol beacon/timing synchronization signal includes: (i) an initial symbol including a body portion and a cyclic prefix, the cyclic prefix preceding the body portion and being generated from an end portion of the body portion and (ii) an extension symbol, which immediately follows the initial symbol. The extension symbol includes a first copy of the body portion beginning at the start of the extension symbol. The first copy of the body portion is immediately followed by a truncated portion, which is a copy of an initial portion of the body portion. The multi-symbol beacon/timing synchronization signal includes a single high power beacon tone, a plurality of low power tones comprising the synchronization signal, and a plurality of intentional Null tones. Each tone designation remains the same for both the initial symbol and the extension symbol.

    • A method is disclosed for operating a wireless telecommunications system. The method has a first step of (A) synchronously multiplexing a downlink communication frequency between transmissions of a plurality of base stations such that each base station transmits continuously for a plurality of consecutive time slot periods; and a second step of (B) receiving the transmission from at least one of the plurality of base stations with a mobile station, and transmitting an uplink transmission to one of the base stations from the mobile station during a time when the base station is not transmitting. The downlink transmission from each of the plurality of base stations includes a Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH) signal. The method includes a further step of multiplexing random access uplink transmissions to the plurality of base stations so as to reduce latency. The step (A) of synchronously multiplexing preferably includes a step of inserting a guardtime period between transmissions of different ones of the plurality of base stations.

    • A TDMA radio communication system combines time and frequency division duplex. It includes a first base station transmitting in first downlink frames (118, 120) on a first carrier frequency (FTX) in a first frequency band and receiving in first uplink frames (122), which have no time overlap with the first downlink frames (118, 120), on a second carrier frequency (FRX) in a second frequency band, which has no frequency overlap with the first frequency band. The system also includes a second base station, which has partially overlapping radio coverage area with the first base station, but is geographically separated from the first base station in order to avoid that transmission from one base station disturbs reception from radio terminals on the other base station. The second base station transmits in second downlink frames (128) on the first carrier frequency and receives in second uplink frames (124, 126), which have no time of overlap with the second link frames (128), on the second carrier frequency. The first and second link frames are offset to have no time overlap. A network controller synchronizes transmission from the first and second base stations.

    • A wireless telephone system comprises a base unit having a base transceiver, and one or more wireless handsets, each handset comprising a handset transceiver. Each handset establishing a time-division multiple access (TDMA) link over a shared RF channel with the base unit via the base transceiver in accordance with a TDMA epoch, which allocates exclusive data and audio packet time slots to each handset. Each handset powers on its transceiver during its respective data and audio packet time slots as necessary to synchronize with the base unit using synchronization data transmitted with a data packet, to detect incoming call data transmitted with a data packet, or to transmit and receive audio information over the TDMA link. The handset powers off its transceiver otherwise during the epoch to minimize handset power use.
