    • An integrated communication system for the transception of facsimile data or binary file data is described. The system comprises a conventional facsimile machine having the components of a scanner (14), sampling device (16), transmission memory (20), compression device (22) and modem (24) connected to a telephone line (12) of a public switched telephone network all being for the transmission of facsimile data and decompression device (28), reception memory (30), recording memory (34) and recording device (36) all being for the reception of facsimile data. These components are under the control of the operations microprocessor (26) and user interface (25). The binary file data transfer components are the Tx/Rx memory (42), floppy disk controller (40) and floppy disk drive (38), again, all under the control of the operations microprocessor (26). The binary file transfer is achieved either by control codes inserted in the Non Standard Field (NSF) of a facsimile transmission conducted under the CCITT Recommendation T.30, or the proposed amendments to the DIS/DTC/DCS signals of the same T.30 Recommendation as are under consideration.

    • This invention relates to the automatic restoral of data transmission by monitoring line degradation and switching to new lines (36, 38) when line quality falls below a prescribed standard. Data transmission is maintained on the leased lines (8, 10) while communication is being established on the dial lines (36, 38) so as not to disrupt data transmission. Energy is maintained on the dial lines (36, 38) at times when data is not being transmitted to prevent a change of channel on the dial lines (36, 38). A signal processor (30), associated memory (32), and analog interface circuitry (80) provide the data restoral functions. Control of the restoral procedure is handled by one modem (e.g., the calling modem (2)), and commands are sent to the other modem over either the leased lines (8, 10) or dial lines (36, 38). Communication is established across two leased lines (8, 10) and two dial lines (36, 38) in the dual line modulation mode and across one leased line (8) and one dial line (36) in the single line modulation mode.

    • A method of matching the operation mode of a modem that connects a digital terminal equipment to an analog telephone circuit at both the calling side and the called side of the analog telephone circuit. When the communication is to be carried out in a synchronized mode, first, the invention provides a matching method wherein a digital terminal equipment connected to an end of the telephone circuit is operated, the digital terminal equipment having means which, depending on an operation instruction, designates the stored operation mode of the opponent's modem for the modem, and wherein the modem analyzes the instruction to select operation mode reference data and sets the operation mode of the modem to a predetermined mode. Second, according to the invention, mode instruction signals by DTMF are transmitted and received between digital terminal equipment connected to both ends of the telephone circuit using multi-frequency DTMF codes for selection used in the telephone circuits, such that operation modes of the two modem devices are automatically brought into agreement with each other. That is, even when the initial operation modes are different between the calling side and the called side, a desired operation mode is set on the calling side. After the called side is off-hooked in response to the calling signal, (1) the operation mode instruction signal is sent from the calling side to the called side using DTMF codes, and when this mode can be set on the called side, this mode is set and a response sound is returned back to the calling side.
