    • A media content distribution system comprising a media source unit for transmitting media content, a media destination unit for receiving media content, and a media management unit for accepting inputs from the media source unit and outputting to the media destination unit. The system allows for redirecting media content directly from the media source unit to the media destination unit by an alternating path when the media management unit fails. The distribution system further includes a set of protocols and behaviors in the media source unit and the media destination unit to insure that in the case of failure by the media management unit, the media source unit and the media destination unit will become aware of the failure and redirect the media content along an alternate path to the user.

    • A network device application programming interface (API) provides an interface to control and receive events from network devices. The network device API preferably resides within a control device, which is coupled to a network of devices. Each network device preferably uses IP-based protocols for sending control commands, and for receiving responses to the commands and asynchronous events.     • A legacy device bridge for use in a network, such as a wired or wireless residential network, is provided. The legacy device bridge performs protocol conversion to enable a network-attached entity that uses a packet-based communication protocol to communicate with and control legacy devices, such as consumer electronics, that rely exclusively on infrared (IR) or serial communication protocols. The legacy device bridge also performs a virtualization function that allows legacy devices to be advertised to the network as devices that comply with a packet-based discovery and control protocol, and to be controlled as such. The legacy device bridge is also adapted to probe, deduce and publish information relating to the state of a legacy device to other entities on the network.

    • A non-IP (Internet Protocol) network is provided with UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) proxy enabling and interfacing logic. The UPnP enabling logic provides the modules required to effect the UPnP addressing, discovery, and description processes for each of the devices on one or more non-IP networks. Each of the non-IP networks may use the same or different network technologies, such as USB, Bluetooth, IEEE 1394, Home API, HomeRF, Firefly, X-10, and so on. During the UPnP control and event phases, the system provides the appropriate control transformation and event proxy processes to communicate commands to each non-UPnP-compatible device in the network, corresponding to the UPnP control commands received from a UPnP control object, and to communicate event status messages to and from the non-UPnP-compatible devices and the UPnP control object.
