    • Support members and method of forming support members for use in producing nonwoven fabrics, especially tricot-like nonwoven fabrics, and films. A topographical support member includes a body having a top surface comprising a pattern of a plurality of peaks and valleys and a plurality of apertures. The apertures have a conical top portion that is surrounded by a cluster of the peaks and valleys. The center line to center line spacing of adjacent apertures is less than the major diameter of the conical top portion of the apertures. The topographical support member is formed in a defocused process by focusing a laser beam so that the focal point is below the top surface of a starting workpiece and drilling with the laser beam the predetermined pattern of tapered apertures. The pattern of tapered apertures forms the cluster of peaks and valleys surrounding each aperture on the top surface of the resulting support member. A smooth, flat surface support member is formed by focusing the laser beam at the top surface of the workpiece or by adjusting the center line to center line spacing of apertures formed by the defocused process so that no peaks or valleys result. A perforated film or nonwoven fabric can be formed using the smooth surface support member.

    • A plastic liquid strainer (10) and a method and apparatus for the fabrication of same is described. The plastic strainer is a cone-shape strainer having a conical side wall (11), an apex end (12) and an open top end (13). The strainer is formed from a plastic film sheet (21) which forms a cone which is then perforated by using laser beams (32) so that a filtration section is made in the plastic and extends from the apex end of the cone. The filtration section (14) is comprised of a plurality of substantially circular holes (15) of predetermined size. The cone thus formed is particularly useful for filtering paints and is disposable after use. Because it uses plastic film material, the paint is substantially free from dust generated by paper filters or lint which were normally released by the cotton sieve sections. The filter does not stretch nor does it become soiled during use as with paper cone filters.
