    • A surgical instrument (200)includes an end effector (202) having a clevis (224) and first and second jaws (226, 228) mutually rotatable between open and closed positions. The jaws (226, 229) are proximally directed and laterally displaced relative to a longitudinal axis of a control shaft (206) of the instrument. The jaws (226, 228) hold first and second parts (12, 14) of a fastener (10), respectively. The first part (12) includes a base (18) having upstanding tissue piercing posts (32, 34), and the second part (14) includes another base (54) defining apertures (58, 60) for receiving the posts (32, 34), as well as a portion (52) movable relative to the second base (54). When the upstanding posts (32, 34) are inserted into the apertures (58, 60), the movable portion (52) can be moved into a second configuration to lock the parts (12, 14) of the fastener (10) together. The instrument (200) is adapted to move the second part (14) into the second configuration.

The radio frequence wave heating source (3) is preferably a microwave heating source, and the apparatus may include one or more waveguides (7) for directing the microwaves towards the conduit (2). The invention provides a water heater or boiler which can heat water on demand (but required the need for a storage tank or the like) using microwave or other radio frequency heating source. One or more microwave radiation absorption members (not shown), such as a metal rod or piece of wire wool, may be disposed in the water to be heated to significantly increase the efficiency of the heater.

    • This invention is directed to a temperature activated infusion device (10) for delivering a specific quantity of medication to a recipient patient. The delivery is accomplished by the use of a sealed pouch or container (16) of a temperature expandable fluid which applies pressure to an adjacent second pouch or container (18) of liquid medication. A medication delivery pressure regulator (22) and fluid metering valve (26) associated with the output of the liquid medication from the pouch or container, insure proper pressure and volume of medication to the recipient patient.
