    • A retractor for a seat belt of a vehicle has a winding shaft (2) for winding up a seat belt (1). A motive spring (3) biases the winding shaft (2) in the winding direction of the seat belt. An electric motor (4) produces torque can be transmitted to the motive spring (3) to change the spring force. A switch coupling (5) transmits the torque of the electric motor to the winding shaft to wind up the seat belt (1). A gear (13) transmits the torque of the electric motor to the winding shaft (2) or the motive spring (3). The motive spring (3), the coupling (5) and the gear (13) are provided on one side of the seat belt retractor. The gear (13) comprises a drive wheel (11) which is rotatably mounted on a shaft (8) rotationally and coaxially connected to a winding shaft (2), and which is rotationally connected to an outer spring end (10) of the motive spring (3) by a rigid rotary connection (15). A first active surface (18) of the coupling (5) is movably mounted against a restoring force on a component (25) securely connected to the rigid rotary connection (15) and is able to rotate around the shaft (8). A second active surface (19) of the coupling (5) is rotationally connected to the shaft (8).

    • A seat belt retractor has a belt reel (2) that is rotatably mounted on a frame (1) and on which a seat belt can be wound and unwound. A motive spring (3) biases the belt reel in the winding direction. An electric motor (4) adjusts the spring force of the motive and/or a torque produced for tightening the seat belt. The torque can be transmitted to the belt reel by a clutch (5). The deformation of a deformable spring element (6) brings the clutch into an engaged state.     • The invention relates to a safety belt retractor which is used as a safety system in motor vehicles. Said safety belt retractor comprises a belt shaft, which is mounted inside a U-shaped housing and which is provided as a support for the belt strap wound thereon, and comprises a rotation damper provided as a force limiting element that acts upon the belt shaft. The safety belt retractor is characterized in that the rotation damper consists of a cylindrical housing (21) which is filled with a highly viscous medium and which is provided with at least one perforated disc (28) mounted therein in a fixed manner. The cylindrical housing is also provided with a disc cam (27) which is mounted parallel to the perforated disc (28) inside the housing (21), which is joined in a fixed manner to the belt shaft (31, 34) whose turning is to be dampened, and which comprises a radially distant cam wing (16) that revolves as the disc cam (27) turns.

    • Seat belt tension is determined by measuring the resistance of a flexible potentiometer that is deformed to produce a controlled change in resistance with increased belt tension. A seat belt mounting has a spring (36) that allows limited extension of the seat belt in response to belt tension. A flexible resistor (35) is mounted to the spring so that spring deformation produces a change in resistance that can be directly correlated to belt tension. Belt tension is input to an airbag deployment logic (32) that may incorporate a seat position sensor, a weight-on-seat sensor and various other sensors that detect the existence, size and direction of any crash. The logic draws conclusions from the tension sensor in the seat belt (38) and other sensors to determine if deployment of the front passenger airbag (34) is likely to be advantageous to an occupant of the front passenger seat.
