摘要： A small quantity of electron attaching gas is introduced into the corona region of an electrical ionizer to stabilize the corona in the otherwise electron non-attaching nitrogen gas. The corona region is closely localized at emitter points so the quantity of electron attaching gas is very small. Clean-dry-air is preferably used as the purge gas but other gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide may be used. The small quantity of electron attaching gas may be introduced either through a hollow needle emitter or an external purge gas (sleeve about the needle, or by using a gas purge nozzle).

摘要： Ionizing method and apparatus includes a pair of inverters (27, 29) to supply ionizing voltages to ionizing electrodes (47, 49) only during alternate halves of a duty cycle (43, 45) in which one inverter is actuated to operate at high oscillating frequency while the other inverter is inactive, and thereafter in an alternate half of he duty cycle in which the one inverter is inactive and the other inverter is actuated to operate at high oscillating frequency. Each inverter (27, 29) includes a return current path (109, 111) that combines in a common return path (115) in which the return currents may be monitored (107) for selective control of one or both of the inverters.
