    • In producing a thermoplastic copolymer by copolymerizing a monomer component comprising an aromatic vinyl monomer, vinyl cyanide and, if necessary, a vinyl monomer (a) copolymerizable with both, at least part or the whole of the vinyl cyanide is charged into a reactor, followed by the initiation of the copolymerization; and the copolymerization conditions are controlled so that the amount (by weight) of the unreacted aromatic vinyl monomer contained in the reaction fluid can become larger than that of the unreacted vinyl cyanide therein, as determined at the point of time when the whole of the monomer component has been charged. By conducting the copolymerization in such a way, the content of the vinyl cyanide monomer in the copolymer formed in the latter stage of the copolymerization can be lowered to give a thermoplastic copolymer which is excellent in various properties such as heat resistance and mechanical strengths and little suffers from discoloration.
