    • The present disclosure is directed to a method of forming a treated fiber. A molten polymer is delivered to a fiber spinning assembly adapted to form and distribute polymer streams. At least one treatment is applied in a liquid state to at least one region on the surface of at least one molten polymer stream within the fiber spinning assembly. A substantial portion of the treatment remains on the surface of the resulting fiber within the treated region. One or more regions on the surface of the molten polymer may be treated with one or multiple treatments. The degree of coverage may vary from little coverage to complete coverage of the fiber surface. The treated regions may be in contact with one another or may be separate and distinct. A nonwoven web may be produced with selectively treated fiber regions by designing one or more fiber spinning assemblies to treat selected fibers or to apply multiple treatments. The regions of the nonwoven web may vary in treatment type, amount, or degree of coverage.

    • The invention relates to a method for the hydrophilic finishing of fibres which consist exclusively or entirely of polyolefins or polyester. According to the invention a mixture containing (a) mostly polyolefins or polyester and (b) between 0.01 and 10 % by weight, in relation to the sum of polyolefin or polyester, of a composition containing at least one compound from the class of alkylethoxylates, is subjected at temperatures of between 180 and 320 DEG C and in the usual manner to a moulding process yielding fibres. The invention is characterized in that (i) no transition-metal compounds are added to the mixture subjected to the moulding process, either before or during said process; (ii) the alkylethoxylates (b) have the general structure R-O-(CH2-CH2-O)xH, where the rest R is an alkyl rest with between 8 and 14 carbon atoms and x is a number between 4 and 10; and (iii) in the individual wetting test the alkylethoxylates (b) require at least four wetting cycles until failure.

    • A fiber which includes a thermoplastic polymer and particles of a ferroelectric material dispersed therein. The thermoplastic polymer may be, for example, a polyolefin, such as polypropylene or polyethylene, and the ferroelectric material may be barium titanate. The ferroelectric material may be present at a level of from about 0.01 to about 50 percent by weight (from about 0.001 to about 13 percent by volume), and will have a longest dimension in a range of from about 10 nanometers to about 10 micrometers. The fiber may be exposed to an electric field. A plurality of the fibers may be employed to form a knitted or woven fabric or a nonwoven web. Also provided is a method of preparing fibers containing particles of a ferroelectric material. The method includes destructuring the ferroelectric material in the presence of a liquid and a surfactant to give destructured particles; the liquid is a solvent for the surfactant and the surfactant is adapted to stabilize the destructured particles against agglomeration. A blend of the stabilized, destructured ferroelectric material particles and a thermoplastic polymer is then formed and extruded to form fibers. The extruded fibers may be collected on a moving foraminous support to form a nonwoven web and, if desired, may be exposed to an electric field. The fiber of the present invention, especially when in the form of a nonwoven web, is especially suited as a filtration medium. For example, the nonwoven web may be adapted to remove particulate matter from a gaseous stream.
