    • A computer-based system for displaying all, or at least many pages of, a document, and including means for scrolling through the document for purposes such as browsing or editing. Most of the display shows text in a "greeked" form with one line of pixels representing one line of text. The greeked form, although illegible, shows shapes of text in the document by indicating the presence or absence of text. Two windows of legible text appear as if two bar-type magnifying glasses were placed over the illegible greeked text. A window may be moved to a new location by touching a stylus to a digitizing tablet (or by clicking a mouse) or by dragging with the stylus (or mouse). When the two windows are adjacent, they become latched and can be moved as one large window. Words of special significance (e.g., embedded labels or search results) can be displayed as legible tags wherever they appear, in the greeked text as well as in the legible text. The greeking is arranged to produce a checkerboard of pixels, that appears as gray, permitting black tags to stand out clearly. Because the tags appear throughout the display at locations corresponding to their locations in the document, they can add significantly to the context presented by the greeking, permitting the user to become oriented and to locate desired portions of the displayed document. Further, tags can permit a user to quickly ascertain the locations and significance of search results.

    • An information processing system includes a first data processing device (10) and a second data processing device (12) each of which is capable if independent instruction execution during instruction cycles having a period which is a multiple of a periodic unit clock signal period. The devices are disclosed to be an arithmetic unit and a central processor coupled together by an interface (14). Each of the data processing devices (10, 12) include a clock generation device (180) having an input coupled to the unit clock signal for generating an associated instruction cycle clock signal which has a period which is a multiple of the unit clock signal period. The clock generation device (180) is further operable for suspending the generation of a next instruction cycle clock signal and for beginning the next instruction cycle clock signal in synchronism with a transition of the unit clock signal. The devices (10, 12) each request synchronization of their respective clocks which are then automatically synchronized to the other devices clock during a transition of the unit clock, allowing for instructions and operands to be synchronously passed between the central processor to the arithmetic unit.

    • A keyboard (10) having a conventional set of alphanumeric keys (26, 27, 28, 30, 31) and special function keys (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 32, 34, 36) which are actuable by an operator using a finger and a stylus (40). The stylus-actuable keys (26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, 36) have keypad areas which are less than a prescribed range of areas. Other keys (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24) which have keypads greater in area than a value in the prescribed range are designed for keystroke operation by the operator's finger. Alternatively, the stylus-actuable keys (26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, 36) have center line spacings which are less than a value from a predetermined range of linea dimensions, while the finger-actuable keys (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24) have center line spacings which are greater in value than a value in the predetermined range. Being suitable for use with a graphical tablet (86), another embodiment of the invention is made with keys mounted to a surface which is angled between 30 degrees and 90 degrees from the horizontal plane of a desktop.

    • A device (10) for controlling a cursor on a data terminal display screen (18) is in the form of a headset and includes an orientation sensor (28) which provides an electrical signal related to orientation without being fixed to a surface. The sensor (28) includes a hollow spherical housing (38) having at least one light source/detector pair (70, 72) mounted opposingly in the inner wall (74) along an axis extending through the center point of the housing. The housing (38) is half-filled with a transparent liquid (76) having a specified viscosity and index of refraction and half-filled with air (78). A beam from source (70) is refracted on passing through the boundary between the air and the liquid. As the orientation sensor (38) rotates with respect to the vertical axis, the changing refraction angle of the light beam causes the detector (72) to sense changing intensities of light, which represents angle of rotation.

    • A data processing system provides a desk view which serves as a graphical user interface to the system. The desk view displays detailed miniaturized images (34) of all documents possessed by the user. The miniaturized document images (34) are user movable and stackable in the desk view. The miniaturized image is derived by the processor from an original image comprising a plurality of pixels. Color selection of the miniaturized images is based on a comparison with corresponding groups of pixels of adjacent groups and the differences in the lightness/darkness of the colors (determined by average counts) is emphasized. The desk view also enables user selected operations including user interaction with graphical representations of mailing (52), disposing (74), annotating, stapling (88), unstapling (90) and printing (72) of documents. User interaction with graphical representations of the desk view is communicated through an electronic stylus for providing a simulation of a common office desk and user interaction.
