    • A mechanical oscillator arrangement includes a mechanical structure having at least one transmission path through it, and at least one mode. A controller is provided with an amplifier and a feedback network which together provide a positive feedback oscillator for exciting a mode of the mechanical structure. The feedback network comprises a non linear amplitude control element (N-LACE), a frequency dependent gain element with an electronic transfer function, and a phase compensator. The mechanical oscillator arrangement also includes an actuator which excites the mechanical structure based upon an output from the controller, and a sensor which senses vibrations in the mechanical structure and then outputs a signal to the controller based upon the sensed vibrations. Such a stabilized positive feedback arrangement is self exciting at the effective resonance frequency of the mechanical structure and avoids the need for an external fixed or variable frequency driver.

    • A method of improving the detection limits of a mass spectrometer by: generating sample ions from an ion source; storing the sample ions in a first ion storage device; ejecting the stored ions into an ion selection device; selecting and ejecting ions of a chosen mass to charge ratio out of the ion selection device; storing the ions ejected from the ion selection device in a second ion storage device without passing them back through the ion selection device; repeating the preceding steps so as to augment the ions of the said chosen mass to charge ratio stored in the second ion storage device; and transferring the augmented ions of the said chosen mass to charge ratio back to the first ion storage device for subsequent analysis.

    • A circuit is provided for providing a drive signal. The circuit comprises a live input and a neutral input, an output for providing a drive signal, a master logic gate. The first output is connected to the master logic gate output. A dc signal is connected to the input of the master logic gate so that the output of the master logic gate changes when the state of the input changes. A shunt is connected to the live input and is capable of being switched into and out of the circuit in response to the live input voltage changing from positive to negative with respect to the neutral input voltage and vice versa. The shunt is also arranged to provide a short circuit for the dc signal to bypass the input of the master logic gate.
