    • A discharge lamp operation apparatus includes a DC power supply circuit (10), a voltage conversion circuit (11), an inverter circuit (13), a load circuit (15), a control unit (1), and a pulse voltage superimposing unit (3). The pulse voltage superimposing unit (3) controls switching elements (Q3, Q4) so as to superimpose a pulse voltage over the applied voltage at both ends of the discharge lamp (LA). The period of time until the discharge lamp (LA) is lit is divided into a preheat period for preheating the discharge lamp and a start period for starting the discharge lamp. During the start period, output voltage (Vdc) of the voltage conversion circuit (11) is gradually increased by the control unit (1) and a pulse voltage is superimposed over the applied voltage at the both ends of the discharge lamp (LA) by the pulse voltage superimposing unit (3).

    • An electronic ballast for lamps or tubes is provided. In one embodiment the present invention includes a ballast controller (12) that includes filament heating circuitry (26) and dimming circuitry. The filament heating circuitry (26) may include preheat dimming circuits which preheat the filaments for a predetermined time period prior to striking the lamp, and steady-state heating circuitry (28) that continually heats the filaments during steady state operation of the lamp (20). The steady state heating circuitry (28) may be adapted to heat the filaments inversely proportional to the dim desired value of the lamp (20). The dimming circuitry may include conventional analog dimming and/or burst mode dimming to define a wide range of dimming characteristics for the lamp.

The ballast also comprises a control circuit (16) by means of which the pulse duty factor of the first and second switch (T1, T2) can be influenced. The pulse duty factor is unequal 50 % and can be controlled by means of the control circuit in such a way that the first and second electrode are thermally charged in an essentially equal manner on average. The invention further relates to a corresponding method for operating a ballast for at least one gas discharge lamp.
