    • Apparatus and method for providing high stability crystal oscillator, see figure 2. A crystal oscillator (with resonator 210) is shown having controlled-amplitude differential output signals via amplitude control (250) and DC level control via (240). The DC level feedback loop can set the DC component of the oscillator signals to a voltage midway between the two supply volatges. The amplitude control loop sets the amplitude of the output of the crystal oscillator signal to be within a range. The amplitude can be set to provide a maximum swing without clipping the supply voltages in order to provide high stability and minimal jitter. The time constants of the two loops can be separated such that instabihtes are avoided.

    • In a controlled oscillator having a resonator (2) and at least one amplifier (1) with positive feedback, the oscillation signal, which is present at the resonator (2), is fed to an analogue-to-digital converter (21). The analogue-to-digital converter (21) supplies numerical information on the amplitude and/or the phase of the oscillation signal to a control circuit (22). The control circuit (22) emits at least one control signal for setting the phase and/or the amplitude of the oscillation of the oscillator. For producing the control signal the control circuit (22) may be associated with a table of parameters (24). The output of the control circuit (22) is formed by a digital-to-analogue converter (23). In one embodiment, the oscillator is a push-pull oscillator having two transistors (34) as amplifiers, which are connected to a controllable current source (7). The control circuit (22) in this case controls the operating points of the amplifiers (34) via a bias at the base connections of the transistors (34) and via the current through the controllable current source (7). In order to start the oscillator, the base potentials of the transistors (34) are set such that they are asymmetrical.

    • A dynamically programmable RF receiver includes an adjustable bias voltage-controlled oscillator (ABVCO) that operates in both low-interference and high-interference modes. The ABVCO uses a drive current to generate an output signal whose frequency varies based on a control voltage. When a jammer detector detects an interference signal, a state machine adjusts the ABVCO from the low-interference mode to the high-interference mode. Reciprocal mixing between the interference signal and phase noise in the output signal is reduced in the high-interference mode by increasing the drive current to reduce the phase noise. The ABVCO switches to the high-interference mode when a bias control circuit sends a bias control signal to the ABVCO, causing the ABVCO to generate the output signal using a greater amount of drive current. A programmable register contains a control value that determines the magnitude of the bias control signal and ultimately the magnitude of the drive current.

    • Systems for controlling the frequency of the output signal of a controllable oscillator (202) in a frequency synthesizer (200) are provided. One such system comprises a controllable oscillator (202) and a frequency control circuit (208). The controllable oscillator (202) is configured to generate an output signal that has a predefined frequency. The controllable oscillator (202) is also configured with a plurality of operational states that are controlled by the frequency control circuit (208). Each operational state of the controllable oscillator (202) defines a distinct frequency for the output signal of the controllable oscillator (202). The frequency control circuit (208) receives the output signal of the controllable oscillator (202) and determines the distinct frequency for the output signal that best approximates the predefined frequency. The frequency control circuit (208) may also provide a control signal to the controllable oscillator (202) that is configured to change the controllable oscillator (202) to the operational state corresponding to the distinct frequency that best approximates the predefined frequency.
