    • The invention relates to a belt pulley comprising a hub (3) which is securely connected to a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, and a roller body (1) for guiding a belt which is associated with a starting device of the internal combustion engine. Said roller body (1) and the hub (3) are in mutual contact by means of a roller bearing (2) and can be coupled together by means of a freewheel coupling (5) during a starting process of the internal combustion engine, during the completion of the starting process and when the starting device is in the idle mode, a relative movement between the roller body (1) and the hub (3) being possible due to the active freewheeling action of the freewheel coupling (5) and via the roller bearing (2). According to the invention, means of the freewheel coupling (5) are in the form of a coil spring (6) which is securely connected to the roller body (1) on one end (8) and which contract during the starting process about the transmission elements (7a, 7b) which are placed in the radial direction in a lying manner between the roller body (1) and the hub (3) and a positive fit connection between the hub (3) and the roller body (1) is established when the coil spring (6) contracts by bringing the hub (3) and the coil spring (6) into contact with each other.

The method according to the invention is characterized by variably selecting, once a start demand for starting the internal combustion (3) is given, a starting mode from a group of available starting modes, using an evaluation of defined selection criteria depending on the current operating situation, and by initiating the respective starting mode. The device for carrying out said method comprises operating state detection and storage means (25) that communicate with a operating strategy unit (22) which is used to evaluate a current operating situation when the starting demand for starting the internal combustion engine (3) from an electromotive driving operation is received, and to select a start mode for starting the internal combustion engine from a group of stored starting modes and to initiate it.
