    • A video coding apparatus may be configured to utilize media extractors in a media extractor track that reference two or more non-consecutive network access layer (NAL) units of a separate track. An example apparatus includes a multiplexer to construct a first track including a video sample comprising NAL units, based on encoded video data, wherein the video sample is included in an access unit, construct a second track including an extractor that identifies at least first one of the NAL units in the video sample of the first track, and wherein the extractor identifies a second NAL unit of the access unit, wherein the first identified NAL unit and the second identified NAL unit are non-consecutive, and include the first track and the second track in a video file conforming at least in part to ISO base media file format. The identified NAL units may be in separate tracks.

    • This disclosure describes filtering techniques applied by an encoder and a decoder during the prediction stage of a video encoding and/or decoding process. The filtering techniques may enhance the accuracy of predictive data used during fractional interpolation, and may improve predictive data of integer blocks of pixels. There are several aspects to this disclosure, including a useful twelve-pixel filter support that may be used for interpolation, techniques that use coefficient symmetry and pixel symmetry to reduce the amount of data needed to be sent between an encoder and a decoder to configure the filter support for interpolation, and techniques for filtering data at integer pixel locations in a manner that is similar to sub-pixel interpolation. Other aspects of this disclosure concern techniques for encoding information in the bitstream to convey the type of filter used, and possibly the filter coefficients used. Predictive coding of filter coefficients is also described.

    • Techniques for efficient significant coefficients coding in scalable video codecs are described. In one configuration, a device including a processing circuit having a set of instruction operative to generate initialization tables for a current frame or slice is provided. The initialization tables have statistics of a significant coefficient pass for a previous encoded frame or slice using scalable video coding. The device also includes a transmitter to transmit the initialization tables with the current frame or slice to a decoder. The decoder can decode a frame or slice with the transmitted initialization tables. The decoder may also use resident default initialization tables.

    • This disclosure describes techniques for coding of refinement coefficients of an enhancement layer in a scalable video coding (SVC) scheme. According to this disclosure, a method may comprise evaluating a history of transform coefficient values associated with one or more previous layers of the SVC scheme, and estimating one or more refinement coefficient values associated with a current layer of the SVC scheme based on the history. On the encoding side, the coding process may include excluding information for one or more refinement coefficient values from the bitstream and signaling to the decoder that such information is excluded from the bitstream. On the decoding side, coding process include parsing the bitstream to identify information that signals to the decoder that information is excluded from the bitstream, and generating such information based on the history associated with one or more previous layers of the SVC scheme.

    • Variable length coding (VLC) techniques are described for coded block patterns (CBPs) used in block-based video coding. In VLC of CBPs, patterns of transform coefficients that are more likely to occur are coded with shorter codes, while patterns of coefficients that are less likely to occur are coded with longer codes. According to the techniques of this disclosure, several different VLC tables are stored in the coding devices. During the encoding and decoding processes, one of the VLC tables is selected and used to perform the coding of CBPs for a given video block. The table may be selected based on a number of neighboring video blocks to the current video block that include non-zero transform coefficients. The techniques may be particularly useful in the coding of video blocks of enhancement layers in scalable video coding (SVC).
